Context: Your life as a shapeshifter can be difficult. Regardless, you managed to find love in Ancient Rome. Life had become better for you, even normal, until an insane man showed up claiming to be your lover from some unknown time. He chased you, even into your fiance’s home, and insisted he could reveal the truth if you just gave him a moment of your time. But why would you do a thing like that?

[Scene opens in the Medieval home of the supposed time traveler]

[SFX: A rooster crowing]

[You sit up from the bed and yawn, glancing about]

[Pause?]

“I-I am awake, Shapeshifter… I’m just… on the floor…”

[You look down and Niles is indeed splayed out on his stomach, chest labored]

“My… apologies if I woke you. I’ve been, hh, largely k-keeping this hidden the last few months but, ah… I suppose I can’t do that any longer…”

[Pause?!]

“I-Injured? No… Ill. T-This period w-will see a colossal loss of l-life from something called t-the bubonic plague… I thought I was being careful, I-I thought…I t-thought I could fix things for y-you before it took me…”

[Pause?!?!]

“W-What? Why did I say nothing…? Y-You… you loathe me, no?”

[Pause]

[To your surprise, he gives a weak chuckle]

“Always s-so cute when enraged… You hiss and your pupils get all slitted, hehe… Oh… You s-should quarantine somewhere, my love. I do not believe the plague h-harms monsters but still.”

[Pause]

“Hm? A-Ah, you’re coiling around me, now? W-What, giving me a mercy kill?”

[Pause]

[Niles stares up at you, exhausted as you wrap him in blankets]

“No, love, please… Please don’t trouble yourself over me… I w-will endure until I correct this.”

[Pause]

“N-No! If y-you go out, t-they’ll capture you again!”

[Pause!]

“Nngh, I k-know you can handle yourself, b-but if I have to see you get hurt again, I will NEVER be able to live-!”

[You take a flower from one of your horns and pop it in his mouth. It’s hard not to smile at his indignance]

“Mmph! Hmph. Really? Taking one of your flowers and shoving it in my mouth? What… what kind of flower even is this?”

[Pause]

“Eternium Lily? I’ve… never heard of such a thing.”

[Pause]

“They only grow on the horns of your species? I see… W-Wait, I… I feel a little better…! Do the flowers have healing properties, then?”

[Pause]

“Amazing! I’ll have to take some samples so-”.

[SFX: Hissing]

“...or not… Why so hostile, my love? Does it hurt to pluck them?”

[Pause]

“Oh… I see. They… are what give you your immortality. O-Or reduced aging, at the very least… But, if they are so important, why would you pluck one just for me?”

[Pause]

“Eheh… I’m not so bad, hm? I’ve enjoyed my time with you as well, Shapeshifter, even if they’ve been terse… But I have noticed your little kindnesses. I’ve noticed that you leave breakfast for me, I’ve noticed I somehow always find my way to bed, even when I pass out at my desk, and I’ve noticed that my glasses have miraculously fixed themselves seven times over now…Why…?”

[Pause]

“I…remind you of your fiance, hm? I see… He did look oddly familiar, I… I really, REALLY hope he wasn’t a distant ancestor of some kind, the time stream is already so ridiculously complex, I don’t think it could handle a scenario like this in addition to me fighting myself for your hand.”

[...]

[Your eyes meet for a moment, and the sadness behind his draws you in. It doesn’t even feel that abnormal as he rests a hand against your side]

“...gods, you are beautiful… I could watch the thoughts form behind your eyes for an eternity. I could rest easy in your arms like this. Please, don’t tease me, don’t… I do not want to hope once more that in all of this intricate nightmare you might love me again… I had it only for half a day, and… the wound is fresh.”

[Pause]

“P-Please, no…”

[Pause]

“I can’t… I can’t!”

[Pause]

“Oh, to Hells with it! Give me your lips, love!”

[He kisses you, harder than you expected for his temperament. Even still, you kiss him back]

“Mmh… Gods, I’d forgotten… Nngh, s-sorry, the cough-”.

[He coughs into his hands and you smell fresh blood]

[Pause!]

“N-No, no, no! I-I’m fine, haha, see? I’m… ahem… OK, yes, I am coughing up a bit of blood, but who isn’t in this day and age? I… No, love, please! Don’t bundle me back up and coil around me! I… I have to get y-you home, I have to fix this!”

[Pause]

“What…? If I’m from the future, then I should know a cure for this plague? Well, yes, some antibiotics would-”.

[Pause?]

“Where to get them…? Ah. Well, typically one would need to simulate an environment w-where microorganisms could create the antibiotic to battle against the infection. I could ostensibly d-do it if we could make it to my home in Austria… that’s quite the journey from France, though.”

[SFX: Cloth rustling]

“W-Wait, no, you can’t just carry me like a backpack! Yes, I know you can shapeshift into something that could get there faster, but I can’t-! Shapeshifter, PLEASE!”

[You pause, hackles raised as the demon tech on his arm sparks in protest. His voice cracks in anguish]

“Do you h-have any idea of how… terrified I felt to see you caged?! To see you beaten and chained?! I-I… you’ve always seemed so… untouchable… B-Beyond harm, but seeing you like that, I…”

[His coughs intermingle with weak sobs as you coil back around him and draw him close]

“Shapeshifter, please… I don’t want to-mmh!”

[You kiss him until you see his body begin to relax]

“W-Wha…? O-Oh, you little shit! Sleeping pheromones, I should have known! I should… I should’ve… Mmh, Niles go bed now.”

[He collapses against your back as you draw a cloak around yourself and prep for the journey ahead]
