Context: Your life as a shapeshifter can be difficult. Regardless, you managed to find love in Ancient Rome. Life had become better for you, even normal, until an insane man showed up claiming to be your lover from some unknown time. He chased you, even into your fiance’s home, and insisted he could reveal the truth if you just gave him a moment of your time. But why would you do a thing like that?

[Scene opens in a Medieval Paris, not far from Notre Dame]

[SFX: The hustling and bustling of the city]

[Niles hurries through the crowds, eyes darting frantically about]

“Gods damnit all! Rrgh, I know the others said if history wanted me to find them, I would but…it’s been three weeks! Their presence feels stronger here, so they must be trying to blend into the crowd… Y-Yes, that’s got to be it. I know my darling, they wouldn’t let themselves be caught off guard…”

[Pause]

“...But they’ve never time leaped with me…I-I…”

[He stops, hardly minding the people cursing him for blocking their path]

“...if…if the version of them from Ancient Rome is here, then…then what happened to the Shapeshifter that already existed during this time period? Would there be two Shapeshifters now? Or…Or would this version have been erased to reconcile…?”

[Long Pause]

[SFX: A crowd gasping]

“W-What? What’s drawing a crowd in these horrid times?”

[Niles reluctantly makes his way over to the crowd of gathered people, who stare into a mobile cage containing…you]

[SFX: Chains rattling frantically]

“My love!”

[He pushes through the crowd until he’s as close as he possibly can be]

“Stop! STOP THIS! Can’t you see they are in pain?! No, no, shhh… I am here, it’s OK!”

[Pause!]

“N-No, darling, I…! I promise you, this wasn’t intentional! You must calm down, t-the collar is digging into your neck every time you try to scramble free!”

[You can hardly focus on him. The heavy chains are making it impossible to breathe and the humans watching this jeer and prod at you]

“Love, PLEASE! You’ll choke yourself to death! All of you, step clear and leave them be!”

[The crowd ignores him]

“I. Said.”

[SFX: Syne humming to life and a brief change in Niles’s voice to something deeper and louder]

[The evil little thing on his wrist glows and his form shoots into that of a giant’s. His voice booms across and the crowd panics and scatters]

“THAT’S ENOUGH!”

[SFX: People panicking and running]

“Rrgh! Bloody IDIOTS! You’re lucky I don’t chase all of you down for this crime!”

[His body returns to normal and a thin beam of light emits from Syne, cutting through the bars]

[SFX: Metal melting]

“Hang on, shh… I have you…”

[He gets you out of your binds and takes you in his arms, so gentle by comparison to the others that you fear you’ll fall]

“Ah-! Mmh… It’s OK… Cling to me, as you need. I’ve a home here that I established last time around. Come…”

[He hurries off with you, holding you close as the sounds of guards approaching]

[SFX: Lots of angry shouting and footsteps]

[Scene Transitions to Niles’s Home]

[He sets you down on his bed gently]

“...I…I need to know what they did to you, Shapeshifter. I won’t know how to treat the wounds otherwise.”

[Long Pause]

[Anger flickers in his eyes and he looks to the side with a sharp huff]

“...I am…sorry I was not there sooner. Let me-”.

[Pause]

“What…What do I intend to do with you? Darling, please, it’s not like that! I promise you that none of this was intentional! I…”

[The strange man sits by you, almost slumped completely over]

“...You are the only one…the only friend and comfort I’ve had during these terrible years… I know we started out as enemies, and I know that you’ve no reason to trust me after all of this…fuss I’ve caused…”

[Pause?]

“Why did…I assume we were enemies? Well, on our first encounter, I was physically thrown into that portion of history, right into you. You hissed and snapped at me and told me I’d rue the day I decided to assault you. I turned and called you a crazed bint who couldn’t handle a small scuffle, then noticed what you were… I knew I’d been sent back for a purpose, and I knew then that it had something to do with you. Given your hostility, I assumed we were meant to duel.”

[Pause]

[He studies you for a moment, eyes sad and deeply tired]

“I wish you remembered… There was a sort of fun to our battles. After a few times, you began to tease me, to infuriate me. Then I began to tease back. Our encounters became more like…well, excuses to spend time together. You gave me little gifts, I’d tell you about the future, and we’d go on pretending to hate each other. Really, I… You were the only thing I had to look forward to…”

[...Pause…]

“Being thrown through the time stream, it’s…it’s terrifying and cold. It’s only a few seconds, but those seconds are spent in an unfathomable abyss outside of reality. Every time, I feel myself lose just that little bit more of my sanity… but it’s tempered, knowing I at least get to see you…”

[Pause]

“I…I’m sorry…I have no control over it. Syne simply helps me regulate it. Unless we get lucky, I cannot take you back to that time period in Rome.”

[You break down, sobbing into your hands, unable to imagine the pain your fiance went through at never knowing what happened to you]

“...I’m so sorry…I swear, I never intended to wrench you from him. I do love you, more than anything! B-But…if you wanted him then I… I would have…managed.”

[Pause]

[He’s silent for a long moment as you grieve before he just barely manages]

“I’m sorry…that I ruined your life… You are right, I am a selfish bastard. I swear to you, darling, I will find a way to fix this! Please, just…be patient with me.”

[Pause]

[Niles sighs through his nose and stands, giving you space]

“Yes, I…I suppose all either of us have now is time to spare.”
