Context: In a society largely consisting of vampires, being a human is difficult. You were taken as one of the Lord's thralls years ago and, despite his nature, he has treated you well enough. He does have a bad habit of hypnotizing you whenever you misbehave. The royal gala is tonight, so you must be on your best behavior. For his sake, and your own.

[Scene opens within the royal gala]

[SFX: Gala music, gentle chatter, general glamour]

[You sit upon the lap of your Lord while he politely chats with the other guests]

“How are you feeling, my Thrall? Nice and comfortable?”

[Pause.]

[He rolls his eyes and shakes his head]

“This one. Always with just a touch of spice to every word they utter. Darling, please don’t make me hypnotize you to make you behave. You’ve been getting headaches lately, remember?”

[Pause]

“Come now, this the life, no? At the Vampire King’s annual ball, dressed beautifully, allowed to interact with so many fine guests. You’re much luckier than most thralls. You know that, hmm? I am good to you.”

[He winks at the gathered guests]

“Don’t mind the pout. I promise, their chains aren’t that heavy at home.”

[SFX: Some polite laughter]

[Pause.]

[SFX: More polite laughter]

“Ooohohoho! My dear, my dear, come now! You wound me by implying your collar is too loose! Pardon us, my friends, if you would. I need to lecture my sweet little Thrall here before I consider hypnotizing them so they’ll dunk their head in the blood pudding.”

[Pause!]

“Oh, I absolutely would, darling.”

[...]

[He flashes a fanged smile]

“Try me.”

[...]

[SFX: Footsteps fading away]

[He plays with your hair idly, smile pointed]

“Someone is in a mood tonight… Do you not enjoy accompanying me to so many parties, my dear?”

[Pause]

“Oh, I do not show you preferential treatment. You’re my only thrall, how could I favor any other? Although, you should be cautious… A feral dog that can bark ‘hello’ would have a fighting chance to usurp your throne.”

[Pause!]

[He laughs and draws you closer]

“Fine, fine, I’m being too mean, understood. Are you being troubled by another headache, darling?”

[Pause]

“No? Good. The aspirin from the doctor appeared to help a little. They’ve been so random, and I’ve worried. I’ve also missed our little games, hmhm. You go out of your way to try and get my attention, I hypnotize you to get you to behave, and then you grumble and we go to bed happy.”

[Pause?]

“Why? Oh, love, have I never explained it? Hmm. Imagine we’re two separate planets. I can see you, and you can see me, but we’re millions of miles away. Hypnosis, staring into the eyes of our, ehm, victims, is like a portal allowing me to step closer to you. Allows me to step right on the surface of what makes you… yourself, I suppose.”

[...?]

“Oh, no, darling. It’s not something you could learn, I fear. You were just a little human when I made you mine. Why, love?”

[Pause]

“You want to be closer to me, hmm? Darling… How much closer could we be? You’re my favorite pet, you know more about me than any other, and I spoil you rotten. What even would you do if you could hypnotize me?”

[Pause]

[His coy smile fades and his eyes turn cold]

“Mmhm… You want to feel like you can trust me more, is it? And why do you not trust me now? Have I done something to offend? Or have you forgotten the definition of ‘thrall’, hm?”

[...]

“Aha, yes. I do hypnotize you as I see fit. I am your master… or have you forgotten that? Have I grown too soft in commanding you, darling? I afford you many freedoms that others in your position might not get. Really, I’m far too lenient. I even put up with that sassy little mouth of yours at times, which can be… difficult. But I enjoy you being yourself. What I do not enjoy is being made to look like a fool in front of distinguished members of the court.”

[...]

“...I don’t want to have to correct you as the others do with their thralls. You can trust me, darling. We’ve been together for years, now. Have I ever led you astray?”

[...<3]

[He sighs through his nose, easing but still stern]

“No. Thank you for apologizing, my sweet. Now… Let us finish this little lesson in trust. Look into my eyes.”

[...]

[You do and his voice begins to echo in your mind]

There we are… I won’t be too severe. I will only ask that you stand up, walk to the refreshments, and retrieve some of that honey wine. Go on.

[...]

[You stand-]

[SFX: A harsh thud and people gasping in alarm]

“...Darling?”

[SFX: Footsteps hurrying over]

[D] “Out of the way, out of the way!”

“D-Doctor…? W-What…?”

[The doctor skids to a stop by you, hurriedly looking you over while the crowd looks on in relative silence]

[D] “Quiet! Alright, let’s see, pulse… No pulse. Checking airways… not breathing. Opening eyelids… C’mooon. C’mon, sweetheart, show me some shrinking pupils! C’mon… Alright, I’m sorry to do this, but I need to listen for a heartbeat.”

[He shifts down and rests his ear on your chest]

“Doctor? A-Are they alright? ...D-Darling…?”

[Pause]

[The doctor sits up and shakes his head]

[D] “...they’re dead.”

[SFX: People gasping]

[Your master drains of any color he had, lips moving silently as he stares down at your corpse]

“No, that… No, they are just playing! Aren’t you, darling? Darling, this isn’t funny! And I don’t appreciate you blocking out my hypnosis like you’re some mindless, shambling fucking CORPSE!”

[SFX: The music dying]

[Pause]

“... oh god.”

[The doctor shakes his head and beckons to some guards]

[D] “Help me load up the body so we can get it out of here. Don’t want to contaminate the crime scene, and we should get the autopsy done as soon as possible.”

[At the word ‘autopsy’, your Master loses it. Raging, screaming, trying to get to you]

“AUTOPSY?! THEY ARE NOT MEAT! I WILL NOT LET YOU PUT THEM ON A COLD SLAB AS IF THEY ARE NOTHING! RRGH, GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF ME! KING’S GUARD OR NOT, YOU WILL NOT TAKE ME FROM THEM! THEY NEED ME TO BE THERE WHEN THEY… t-they wake back…”

[SFX: A thud and a body being dragged]

[He collapses, silent and completely in shock, the guards dragging him off in stunned silence]

[D, with a sigh] “...Not the night I expected to have. But… how does a vampire kill someone with a single look? And, did he want to kill you in the first place? … I suppose it’ll be up to me to finish the last chapter of your story, my poor friend. Whether you deserved better or not, you still deserved your life.”

[SFX: The body getting taken away]

[D] “I hope we can find peace for you… Somehow. If not peace, then at least justice.”
