[hospital machines whirring and beeping]

[door opens with a soft creak]

“... Baby?”

[footsteps]

“... Are you still asleep?”

[he stops by your bed and sits down]

[long pause]

“Still sleeping, huh?”

“You… you must have had a long day.”

[he lets out a hollow laugh]

“All those machines… it can’t be comfortable with all of them keeping you around…”

“But I guess it’s necessary.”

[long pause]

“... Your parents must have visited you again today… I got a call from them, you know.”

“They’re really nice… they gave me some family recipes so that when you wake up, we can eat them together… I’m glad that they see me as part of the family.”

“... And I definitely didn’t almost burn down the kitchen while practicing, hahaha…”

[pause]

“What else do I have to tell you…?”

“Ah… your best friends have been putting something big together for you… I came with them to visit you the other day, remember? They haven’t asked me to do anything yet, but they said that I’m part of their plan, so I’m excited to see what they’re doing.”

[short laugh]

“... I’ve also been taking care of your game accounts… I know you wouldn’t want to fall behind, what with the dailies they provide. Once you wake up, we can play through the events together. I haven’t played them yet… just so we can play through it together.”

“And I’m taking care of the house as best as I can… It… It feels so lonely cleaning without you.”

“... The house feels so quiet without you, honey.”

[his voice breaks]

“... I’d do anything to trade places with you… just so you don’t have to be the one to suffer. But then again… knowing you, you’d never let me do that.”

“You’re too kind… aren’t you?”

[he sighs]

[he’s trying not to cry]

“... If I had gone with you that day… would you be safe…?”

[he starts crying]

“If I… If I hadn’t asked you to go home ahead of me… if I hadn’t been caught up talking to my friend… if I was with you–! Maybe I could have saved you…?”

[long pause as he sniffles]

“It probably wouldn’t have mattered… but if I could have been there with you… could I have at least kept you from getting injured like this…?”

“Everyone tells me it’s not my fault… everyone says that you wouldn’t have wanted me to think like this…”

“But I can’t help it…”

[he cries]

“I dream about that night… I hear the music clear as day, I remember every word I said to my friend… I remember how you tugged on my arm and said that you were going home because you were tired…”

“... I remember you saying that I didn’t have to come with you because you knew I had a ride…”

“Every time I have that dream… I try to scream, I try to grab your hand, I try to tell you that I’ll come with you, that I’ll drive, *anything*...”

(quivering voice) “But it never works… and you always slip through my fingers again…”

[he takes your hand]

“Baby… please wake up…”

“I can’t… I can’t do this without you… I can’t even begin to imagine my life without you…”

“I want to spend my life with you… everything feels so– so empty without you…”

[he sobs]

“I’d do anything… anything to see you smile… to hear your laughter again, to feel your touch… your kiss…”

“I can’t… let you go…”

[pause]

“You’ll wake up, right…? The doctors say it’s– it’s uncertain but…”

“... You have to wake up… there’s so much more for us to do… so much more to see…”

“... I want to experience it all with you.”

[sobbing]

“You… you look so peaceful… I wonder if you can hear me?”

“You always… look so beautiful. Even when you’re sleeping…”

“... Are you dreaming, love…?”

[long pause]

“If you’re dreaming… I hope it’s a peaceful dream…”

“I hope it’s a dream where you aren’t in pain… I hope it’s a dream where you’re surrounded by everything you love… including me…”

[he cries for a while]

“*sniffle* … You know… that night… my friend was asking me if I was going to marry you.”

“I don’t want to do anything without talking to you about it… but when the time comes… I hope you say yes.”

[pause]

“... So wake up, my love…”

“I’ll be by your side when you wake up…”

[eventually, he falls asleep at your side, his quiet snoring audible]
