[wolves growl as they pursue you through the woods]

[you trip and fall, the wolf pack growls as they close in]

[flames roar as the kitsune jumps in front of you. The wolves yelp and scatter, crashing into the underbrush as spirit flames crackle protectively around you]

“Ugh… annoying pests… they’ve been getting more active lately.”

“... Hello, human. Are you hurt?”

[pause]

“Oh, do calm down. Do I look like I’m a wolf? I’m a kitsune! Look at these adorable ears and fluffy tail!”

“And I saw you in a bit of trouble, so I came to help you! … Shouldn’t you be thanking me?”

[he crouches down next to you]

“Hmm, looks like that tree branch cut your leg. That won’t do… it might get infected.”

[he pulls some medicinal herbs out of his bag]

“But I think we should make sure those wounds don’t get worse first, hm?”

“How do you know you can trust me? Well dear, kitsune may have a reputation as tricksters, but I wouldn’t save you just to abandon you at a drop!”

[pause]

“Oh don’t worry. I’ll be careful!”

[he begins to treat your wounds]

“You still look at me with those distrustful eyes. How upsetting… perhaps exchanging names would make you feel more comfortable around me?”

[pause]

“Hahaha! Don’t mix us kitsune up with the fae now! We don’t have nearly as much power over names as they do!”

“How about this? I’ll go first! … You can call me Masa. The name means ‘genuine’, you know!”

“And you are…?”

“Ah, what a lovely name!”

“So, while your savior is treating your wounds, why don’t you tell me what on earth you were doing here at this hour?”

[long pause]

“But you really shouldn’t walk through the woods in the dark! Honestly, some humans just seem to have no common sense, do they?”

[he finishes wrapping your leg]

“There, all finished.”

“Can you still walk?”

[you get up and wobble slightly]

“Oop! Steady now! How are you gonna deliver that medicine tonight if you collapse?”

“Take your time. Your savior is here to steady you.”

“Why go this far? Well let’s just say that you’ve piqued my interest.”

“In fact… the fact that you managed to make it this far into the woods at all is just fascinating to me.”

“Let me answer your question with another! Why do you think you’ve never seen a kitsune outside of storybooks?”

“But in reality, it’s because we have about every protective and concealing spell under the sun helping to protect us!”

“And, my darling traveler, you just happen to have somehow stumbled directly past my barrier.”

“Oh, no need to apologize. Besides, I got to meet someone like you! Someone interesting, cheeky, and just so fascinating.”

“How on earth did you manage to break through the barrier seemingly without any effort at all? I’m just itching to find out.”

“Oh! You’re right! You need to deliver this medicine by sunrise, don’t you?”

“Hmm, you’ll end up walking very slowly with your leg as damaged as that. So–!”

[he picks you up]

“Up you go!”

“What, shocked that I’m so strong? I certainly don’t look like it, but I can lift an entire tree out of the ground no problem!”

“Now hold on tight! I’m going to bring you directly out of the forest!”

[wind rushes past as he starts running]

“Hahaha! It’s an amazing feeling isn’t it? The wind rushing through your hair?”

[pause]

“Oh don’t worry, you’ll get used to it! Don’t worry my darling, we’ll be there soon!”

[long pause with the sounds of running and wind whooshing past]

[his footfalls slow to a stop]

“... Hey, come on! Open your eyes! We’re here at the edge of the forest safe and sound!”

[pause]

“Aw, you don’t like me holding you? But you’re so nice and warm! Should I just drop you then?”

[pause]

“Hahaha! Alright alright!”

“See? There’s the village right over there. Thanks to me, you’ve made it out of the forest with only a rather serious injury!”

[pause]

“Yes, feel free to shower me with praise! It’s only natural to thank your savior after all!”

“Now on you go. I’m sure you can handle the rest from here.”

“Oh! But… do come to visit me once in a while, hm? Whatever power you have that let you break through my defenses so easily simply must be studied! And I’m curious about you as well!”

[pause]

“Why should you come back?”

“Well… perhaps I was lying ever so slightly about not having power over names?”

[he dodges the rock you throw at him]

“Hahahaha! Relax! I promise I won’t make you do anything nefarious! Besides, not only do you have my name too, but I really can’t make you do much of anything at all!”

“All I can really do is make sure you feel the urge to come visit me. And even then you can ignore that feeling as much as you want. But please don’t… that’ll make me really sad.”

[pause]

“Oh, let’s not go into details right now, my dear. The sun will rise soon and that village is in dire need of the precious medicine in your bag. Off you go now!”

[dirt crunches underfoot as you leave]

“... What a fascinating human…”

“I hope they come back.”
