[Scene opens in your new home]

[SFX: Crickets/general farmland ambiance]

[You mosey about your new home, trying to get cell service. It’s out in the country and it seems like the wait for the internet installer is going to keep you without pizza, for the time being]

[SFX: The Listener walking around/unhappy phone noises]

[With a sigh, you glance out the window and see a pretty large man with hair hanging in front of his eyes passing by]

[SFX: A window opening]

[Pause!]

[The man jumps with a squeak, whipping around to face you]

“A-Ahh! Ah…? O-Oh… Oh! I-I’m so sorry! Y-You’re the new neighbor, right?”

[Pause]

“...N-Neat.”

[Pause?]

[He shuffles nervously]

“I-I, um… I-I run the orchard further d-down the way, yeah. W-Wow, you h-have really pretty e-eyes- I MEAN, um… H-Hi. Welcome to the um… neighborhood? H-Haha, ahh…”

[Pause?]

[He cocks his head to the side slightly, face red]

“D-Do I… get cell service out here? Um… No? I-I have to rely on, y-you know… country internet…”

[...]

“W-Well, don’t look t-too down. Y-You’re welcome t-to walk the trail, if you want. I-It’s real pretty!”

[Pause]

[He blushes so hard you worry he’s turning into a tomato]

“I… I um… G-Gotta go!”

[He books it, surprisingly fast for someone that size]

[...]

[Alright then]

[Time transitions from morning to early evening]

[SFX: The Listener walking about, messing with their one, and then something breaking]

[You’re still trying to get some signal. Pizza sounds so dang good, better still because it is out of reach, when you hear something break]

[Pause!]

[SFX: The Listener running to the kitchen]

[You race to the source of the noise and come face to face with the man from before standing outside the kitchen window, frozen in terror]

[Pause?!]

[SFX: The Listener running outside]

[He stares at you, frozen, bright red, as you run out to confront him. You stare back, mobile and relatively the same color]

“I-I-I-I…”

[Pause?]

[He stammers, and even though his bangs mostly hide his eyes, you can still see him glancing nervously from side to side as he clutches wildflowers tightly to his chest]

“I-I’m so sorry! I-I wasn’t trying to be creepy, I-I promise! I just… I-I um…”

[SFX: The flowers rustling]

“I… I-I picked these for you… f-from this special place b-by the river. I-I always like to imagine that l-little fairies that live there, a-and maybe they’d g-give me good luck w-when I came t-to talk to you, b-but I lost track of time l-looking out on the water a-and now it’s night a-and I-I didn’t want them to wilt s-so I was gonna j-just leave them in a v-vase but it’s so cold out and-!”

[...]

[You approach him and he freezes up, letting out a few squeaks]

“U-Um, p-please don’t punch m-me. Y-You might b-break your h-hand like the l-last guy, a-and I don’t wanna hurt no one! I-I just… I… W-When you said hi earlier, I-I realized I should get you a housewarming gift, a-and… a-and you’re so pretty a-and… a-and… a-and you seemed lonely… a-and…”

[He gasps as you reach up and gently push his bangs away from his eyes]

[...]

“O-Oh! U-Uhh… O-OK… O-OK, um… haha… You pushed m-my bangs out of my face… Y-You’re um… oh… Y-You touching my face feels… so nice…”

[Pause?]

“... I-I… never told you my name when we met? Oh… G-Gosh, um… i-it’s Noah. I-I run the apple orchard d-down the trail. Which… I think I d-did… mention…”

[Pause?]

[His blush deepens, which seems illegal]

“... I-I… O-Oh no, t-this must be so c-creepy to you! Gosh dang… I’m… I’m so sorry, I s-swear I’m not a-a creep! I-I’m just… I don’t talk t-to people a lot…”

[Pause]

[He laughs nervously]

“I-It shows, r-right? Hehe… enh… w-well… I-I’ll keep my d-distance, I’m… I’m really sorry…”

[Pause?]

[He pauses, the flowers shaking in his hands]

“Y-Yeah… the flowers are really, r-really pretty. I p-planted them b-by the river a-and they’ve really grown o-over the years. I’m… p-proud of them, you know? They d-don’t talk or think… I-I think… Can you imagine? They’d be all, ‘Ow, quit it, bees!’. O-Or… maybe kissy n-noises…?”

[The blush deepens]

“H-Here… I-If you want them…?”

[SFX: The flowers shifting again as the Listener accepts them]

[Noah shuffles awkwardly and rubs the back of his head]

“I-I, um… I-I really am s-sorry. I-It’s usually just me on the orchard. T-The quiet is nice. B-Being disconnected i-is nice, but… I guess I… I-I guess I didn’t realize h-how much I missed h-having a human friend, y-you know?”

[Pause]

[He smiles. It is about as cute as the rest of him]

“R-Really? That’s m-mighty kind of you… ‘Specially considering h-how annoying I c-can be with all m-my stammering, a-and such.”

[Pause]

“... Y-You’ve been kind of lonely out here, too? I… I get it. I-It’s beautiful out here, e-even if you can’t get a cell s-signal. Peace is nice… but… h-having more t-than the birds a-and other critters to talk to sounds… nice, too.”

[Pause?]

“Huh? Y-Yeah! I have… a little place on my property t-that does some small wildlife rehabilitation. M-Mostly birds. I… I like the birds, even if t-they’re always kind of mean. C-Crows are fun if you make peace with them. W-We had a cassowary once t-that got loose from a zoo, I-I guess? N-Named him Tom. H-He kicked me pretty hard, hehe. T-That’s how I got these big scars, actually.”

[SFX: Noah lifting his shirt up]

[He raises his shirt and you can some faint gashes running diagonally down his chest. His very muscular chest]

“See? Hehe. H-Hurt like H-Hell, but it’s n-not like he was being mean on purpose…H-He was just scared…”

[Pause?]

[He turns red again]

“U-Um, um, um, uhh… y-you can feel ‘em, sure…”

[You gently brush your fingers over the scars with a wince and feel him shiver]

[Pause?]

“S-Sorry! I-It’s been a long time since anyone t-touched my chest! I-I… d-damnit, why is this so hard… Nnh… I-I knew I s-shoulda taken my cousin u-up on playing t-that tabletop thingy with the dragons. I-I bet I’d talk better t-then if I had to t-talk my way through a p-potion sale…”

[Pause]

“... Y-You’re real nice. A-And real pretty.”

[Pause]

[He covers his face with his hands. You can almost see steam shooting out of his ears]

“NO, c-c’mon, Noah! Y-You were doing d-decent!”

[Pause!]

[He freezes as you hug him. He’s too cute, how can you not?]

“O-Oh! … Hugs?”

[Hugs]

“...Hugs… U-Um, c-can… can I hug you back, pretty please? I-I’ll be gentle! I know I’m real big, but I promise I k-know how to control my strength!”

[Pause?]

“D-Do I wanna… c-come inside and w-watch a movie? B-But it’s awful late, are you sure?”

[...?]

“E-Eight PM is REAL late if you gotta get up at four!”

[Pause?]

“N-No, I wanna! I just… I d-don’t wanna be a bother, you know?”

[Pause]

[Again, he smiles. Even in the moonlight, you can see his faint freckles light up]

“O-OK… I’d, um. I’d like that. A lot.”

[SFX: The two of them heading inside]

[Pause?]

“A-A favor? U-Um, sure.”

[Pause]

[To your surprise, he laughs]

“Use m-my landline to order pizza? Yeah… I-I can manage that. Georgio will be g-grumpy about having to walk a little bit but a g-good enough tip will make it all good. I’ll go do that, c-come back and… movie?”

[Pause!]

[He beams, a pep in his step]

“G-Great! I’ll be back i-in ten!”

[SFX: Noah jogging off excitedly]

[You put the flowers in a vase, admiring them. You certainly didn’t see things ending this way but, hey, hugs, pizza, and himbo. Not bad. ]
