[nighttime ambiance]
[pencil tapping]
“Ugh… these reports are getting more and more frequent…”
[papers rustling]
“These vampires… even skilled hunters have trouble with them… Orion lost an arm trying to kill one for goodness’ sake!”
“And I’ve made virtually no progress on my investigation into this…”
“I mean… I got a sample of the dead infected vampire from her, but that’s about it… nothing else has come up.”
[he leans back in his chair]
“This is getting frustrating…”
[tapping on the window]
“Hm?”
“What the– a bat?”
[poof]
“Huh?!”
[he runs towards the window]
[opening window]
“What are you doing here?! This is the main headquarters of the Hunter’s Guild! If you’re seen, you’ll get yourself killed!”
[you hop inside]
“Who says I wouldn’t let that happen to you?! Have you forgotten that this truce of ours is temporary?”
[he shuts the window]
“Now what in the hell are you doing here? I’ve had radio silence from you for months, and you suddenly show up out of the blue? At my window, no less. And– how did you even know that this window was my room?!”
[pause]
“... You just flew by a few windows until you found me.”
“What if someone else had seen you?! Most hunters here are taught to shoot down bats on sight, you know.”
[pause]
“Oh haha. Ever so confident in yourself.”
“One day, that’s gonna be what kills you.”
“Now tell me why you’re here.”
[pause]
“... You have new information that I need to know immediately?”
“... I’m listening.”
[long pause]
“... What…?”
[pause]
“... You really expect me. To believe that Guild Black Crow, the most famous vampire hunter guild in the world, is behind this?”
[pause]
“... What do you mean ‘I need to see my own proof to believe it?’ Are you telling me that I already have the proof?”
[pause]
“Do I have access to the records room?”
“I already combed through there, didn’t I? I told you that I confirmed that similar attacks happened a century ago.”
[pause]
“Uh… how did you know that Guild Black Crow transferred a ton of old files to us because of lack of space in their records room?”
[pause]
“A fellow vampire told you.”
[he sighs]
“I shouldn’t be surprised.”
“But– back to the point. What could be in the records of Guild Black Crow?”
[pause]
“... Well yes, Guild Black Crow has been around ever since your kind started appearing, but what does that have to do with anything?”
[pause]
“... They were the ones who managed to stop these aggressive vampires before?”
“... Fine. I’ll go take a look.”
“But we got thousands of those old case reports. Looking through them would take me months.”
[pause]
“What?! Come with me?!”
“And show you all the internal defenses of our guild? Yeah, no thanks.”
[pause]
“Okay, I guess you are the one who knows what to look for, but not only would I be endangering the guild, but going through the halls with you would get us attacked on sight.”
[pause]
“... What do you mean you can hide in my coat?”
[poof]
“Oh, right. You can turn into a bat.”
“Ugh… fine.”
[he takes his coat off the coathook]
“You can hide in this pocket here. It’s usually used to hold wooden stakes, and it has a flap over the top. And don’t even think about trying to peek out; I’m not risking anyone noticing you.”
[pause]
“I’m not–! I’m more worried about you learning about our defenses, of course! Besides, if I’m seen bringing a bat into the guild I’ll get in serious trouble too.”
[he puts on the coat]
“Now come on.”
[you fly into the pocket]
(slightly muffled) “Good. Let’s move quickly; I’d like to avoid getting stopped.”
[door opens and closes]
[timeskip]
[door creaks]
[door closes with a thud]
(whispering) “... Don’t come out just yet. Let me check if anyone’s here.”
[long pause with walking noises]
“... Good. This place is deserted. Come out.”
[you fly out and transform back]
“I don’t think I’m going to get used to that anytime soon.”
[pause]
“Oh haha. Just because this is the second time you’ve been in my coat doesn’t mean anything.”
“Guild Black Crow’s documents are here. I’d better not see you trying anything funny, got it?”
[long pause, papers fluttering, pages flipping]
“Yeah… one century ago. These reports line up with ours.”
[more flipping]
“Hm? You found it?”
[you pass the file over to him]
“... Oh. This is a report about how the violent vampires were dealt with.”
“Hmm…”
[silence and flipping pages]
“A human sorcerer was behind it… just like our reports say… trying to take over the world by making an army of vampires under his control… blah blah blah, I already–”
[pause]
“... What’s this…?”
[long pause]
“What the...”
“Why is the recipe for the virus that caused the vampires to become strong and unusually violent marked like this…? Why– why was the recipe saved in the first place? Shouldn’t something this dangerous be destroyed…?”
[pause]
“... Look back into the case report for the testing section?”
[papers flipping]
(reading from the paper) “Testing logs... mental abilities heavily decreased… (muttering) despite infected vampires being stronger… (muttering) undergo sudden decomposition between five to ten days…”
(reading from the paper) “... Could… could potentially be useful…?”
[you hold out an envelope to him]
“... What’s that?”
[pause]
“You– you intercepted a messenger crow from the Black Crow Guild? How? Those messenger crows are under a ton of concealment and protection spells.”
[pause]
“Not telling me? Hah… fine. What’s in this?”
[he takes it]
“It looks like you’ve already opened it– hm?”
“This wax seal… this is from the head of Guild Black crow.”
[he takes the letter out of the envelope]
[long pause as he reads it]
[he clenches the paper tightly]
“No… no, no no, this– this can’t be.”
“This seal is definitely the Head of Guild Black Crow’s– this writing is his, because we’ve gotten letters from him before…”
“Ha… haha…”
[he sits down]
“These fools…!”
“The Apocalypse Project…? They plan on mass infecting all the vampires in the world so that they all die off… at once?”
“Don’t they care about the amount of people that will die in the meantime?! Just one of those vampires can take down an entire village alone! Heck, five or so could destroy a city if the circumstances are right!”
“Guild Blue Phoenix– they had to fight off an invasion of the infected vampires just a week ago and they barely survived; they say they have to go back to being an adventurer’s guild because so many of their hunters died to defend the village they were based in!”
“And are they so confident that they could survive this?!”
“Not to mention that new vampires always pop up! What were they thinking?! Something like this endangers everyone, not just vampires!”
[pause]
“... Do I believe you now?”
[he sighs]
“... Yes… I do.”
[pause]
“Honestly…? I don’t know what our next move is. The fact that they moved this old file here means that they don’t need the old recipe anymore… in fact… they’ve probably improved it.”
[pause]
“... No, I don’t think our Guild Head knows anything about this. This is probably Black Crow acting on its own. Heck, I don’t even know if Black Crow’s own members are aware of this.”
[pause]
“... You think you know how to get started on combating this?”
[pause]
“You want me to convince my Guild Head that something’s up?”
“Well… yeah. Our Guild Head’s a smart lady. If I put Guild Black Crow on her radar with these records alone, she’ll probably figure something out.”
[pause]
“You know where they’ll try a mass infection next?”
[pause]
“... The Midnight Ball isn’t just a myth? There's actually a ball like that?!"
[pause]
"It’s– it’s happening in a month?”
[pause]
“Hm… a huge congregation of vampires… it does sound like the perfect place to release a virus.”
“How do you propose we stop them?”
[pause]
“... What…? The Midnight Ball is a trap?”
“Oh… I see. So using whatever vampire network you have you’ve already warned everyone who will be at the ball? So you’re planning on capturing all of them or what?”
[pause]
“... You’re going to kill them. To send a message.”
[pause]
“I– look, I get that what Guild Black Crow is doing is absolutely insane. But you’ll forgive me for still not wanting to see fellow hunters die. Plus, the ones carrying out a mission like this have got to be skilled hunters. I’m not convinced that your plan will go off without a hitch.”
[pause]
“... I’m sorry, what?”
[pause]
“Come with you?! Why would I do that?!”
[long pause]
“... Ah… Actually… Yes, I think that would work.”
“Hah… you actually want to spare the hunters. How strange of you.”
[pause]
“Ugh, fine. I’ll owe you a favor in the future.”
“But we should get out of here now.”
[pause]
“Right. My Guild Head will be suspicious if I have this letter. So here.”
[he hands the letter back to you]
“Let’s go. I’ll carry you back out.”
[pause]
“... Fine. I’ll wait for whatever kind of correspondence you send me.”
“We’ll take down Guild Black Crow’s insane plan. And then we go right back to being enemies.”
