“Ugh… just my luck…”

[he takes in a shuddering breath]

“Great job, Callum… all those times that Celeste told me to conserve my healing potions and you just had to go and use them all at once…”

[he sits down and tosses his sword onto the ground]

“... And now you’re all out of potions… because you used them all while fighting those direwolves…”

“The rest of this investigation does not bode well…”

“I should… just be glad that I still had bandages.”

[he sighs]

“Gale taught me how to make healing potions, right…? How did the recipe go again…?”

[he closes his eyes]

[quiet shimmering sound as you fly a little closer]

“Um… five Bleeding heart buds… three cups of sugar… a teaspoon of… crushed violetgrass…?”

[he opens his eyes]

“... Hm?”

[he sees you right in front of him]

“Gah!”

[he stumbles back]

“Ugh–! Ow!”

[pause]

“I– I’m… okay, but…!”

[long pause]

“... I’m not hallucinating from bloodloss… right?”

“There’s… a real, live fairy hovering in front of me…?”

“Wait! Please, don’t go!”

(gently) “I– I won’t try to capture you, or hurt you! I promise!”

“I’m a good human, I promise… I was just startled because I’ve never seen a fairy in person before.”

“Besides… I’m injured. I couldn’t do anything to you even if I wanted to.”

[pause]

“Um… yeah. All this red stuff is blood.”

“Have you never seen blood before?”

[pause]

“Really? Fairy blood is either golden or green? Huh. I’m… not sure what I was expecting…”

“... Yeah. Of course it hurts. It’s a giant gaping wound on my side that I got from fighting some direwolves.”

[magic sounds]

“... Huh?”

“Why are you flying around me like that?”

[loud magic tone]

“Ack–!”

[magic fades]

“... Whoa.”

“Did you just… heal me?”

[pause]

“The wound is completely gone… i-incredible… I knew fairies had some crazy healing powers, but this is amazing!”

“Thank you for helping me!”

“The others have always told you not to talk to humans? Well– it makes sense. There are some awful people out there that capture your kind for profit. I should consider myself lucky that you approached me at all.”

[pause]

“My name? You want to know my name?”

“... Hey, hold on. This isn’t one of those fairy tricks where I ‘give you my name’ and you suddenly have control over me, right?”

“Oh, yeah. I guess you didn’t word it that way…”

“Alright. My name is Callum Verdant. I’m an adventurer that works for the Blue Phoenix Guild.”

[pause]

“Oh um… the branch I work for is located in the city of Mountport. It’s pretty close by.”

[pause]

“What I’m doing out here?”

“Um… you’ve probably seen adventurers and travelers come through this forest before, right?”

[pause]

“Yeah. This magic forest is a convenient shortcut to the Ashen Mountains, and there’s all sorts of useful materials and stuff up there. If you’re willing to risk getting attacked by the creatures that live here.”

[pause]

“Mhm. Now… recently, one of our guild members went missing. His name is Kade Aldern, and he’s one of the mages that works for our branch.”

“Last we heard, he was heading to the Ashen Mountains to gather wyvern scales for his potions. Normally he would have someone with him, but his party all had something else come up. Plus, he’s pretty good at protecting himself, too.”

“But… he still went missing. And everyone’s been trying to find him. The Blue Phoenix Guild doesn’t leave anyone behind.”

[pause]

“What?”

“You– you might have seen him?! Where? Can you lead me?”

[pause]

“Promise you something? What is it?”

[long pause]

“... You want me to come and visit you every now and then?”

“Well… I’ve got no objections. You’re helping me, after all.”

[he gets up]

“Lead the way! We’re burning daylight, and it’s not advised to remain in this forest after dark.”

[the two of you go deeper into the forest]
