[SFX: A door opening and bar ambiance washing over the Listener]

[You head into the bar and are almost immediately face-to-face with… your ex-boyfriend]

[Z] “Well, hello, Baby Girl. Running a few minutes behind to your little bartender job?”

[Pause]

[He laughs coolly]

[Z] “That’s an awfully mean way to talk to your boyfriend, sweetheart…”

[Pause!]

[He rolls his eyes]

[Z] “Oh, please… I’m not your ex, anything… Besides, it’s not illegal for me to get a drink, is it?”

[...]

[He smirks that infuriating smirk down at you]

[Z] “Protest all you want… You miss me. I can see it in your eyes.”

[...]

[Z] “Tch, fine. I’m going back to my table. I’ll be sure to tell the boys you say “hi”.”

[SFX: Heavy boots clomping across the busy bar]

[Pause]

[Your Neko coworker, Polo meanders from the back, ever sassy]

[P] “Polo, Neko bartender supreme, present and accounted for! Ew, is that your ex, Zane? Ugh, what a toxic dick… I don’t know what you ever saw in him. Everyone knows vampires are almost always super uppity and possessive.”

[...]

[P] “Sweetie, don’t. I can see your eyes drifting apart and I know that look!”

[Pause!]

[P] “That’s the look of, “Mmh, but those muscles. Mmmhh, but it’s kind of hot when he gets jealous. Mmmm, I like it when he’s a little mean to me and then apologizes all sweet, and MMMHHH, when he gets going in the sheets-!”.”

[Pause!!!]

[Polo rolls his eyes and helps you catch up on drink orders]

[SFX: Drinks being made]

[P] “Look, I’m just saying you can do better than Zane. I know his type and, believe me, I’d want in his pants too if I didn’t know better. Man is hot. But you’re a sweetheart with a brain in you.”

[...]

[P] “Oh, here we go… “He’s not that bad”, baby girl, sweetie, honey, DARLING… Don’t do this to yourself. He’s already glaring over at me, apparently forgetting I have a BOYFRIEND, ZANE!”

[Your ex turns red, stands and storms from the bar]

[P] “And there he goes, stomping on out. I swear… All of this because you got up on the karaoke stage and sang to some rowdy patrons a little seductively? The man is super hot, vamp privilege, ugh, but he’s not good for you. He’s barely good for himself!”

[Pause]

[P] “Oh hon, I know. Moving on is hard, but you’ve been here before, TWICE! Focus on your job, focus on finding your own happiness, and things will be OK, OK?”

[...]

[P] “Thatta girl! Now, let’s get through Hell night, mojitos are half-off and that means my pants are gonna be half-off before too long!”

[SFX: Fade out on bar ambiance. The Listener opens the door as Polo calls from within:]

[P] “Bye gurrrl, don’t forget, you’re bringing the key lime pie for game night!”

[Pause!]

[SFX: The door shutting and the Listener being grabbed and pushed up against a wall]

[Pause!]

[Z] “Relax, Baby Girl… it’s just me.”

[He’s got you against the wall, eyes wild]

[Z] “...You drive me fucking crazy, you know that? One second, we’re happy. The next fucking second, I’m an asshole, I don’t appreciate you, la-di-freakin’-da! Yeah, sure, I’m not good enough, but you decided I was. You KEEP deciding that I am, then changing your damned mind! S’ fucking INFURIATING!”

[Pause!]

[He lets out a sharp laugh]

[Z] “Then just let you go?! Aha, are you crazy?! You think it’s that easy for me to just move on? However hard it’s been for you, it’s been infinitely harder for me! Sitting up during the day, wondering if you’re OK, then having you sneer at me any time I get too close… I miss those stressed little sighs you’d do when you woke up… how they turned happy when I rubbed your shoulders for you.”

[Pause!!]

[Z] “There was NOTHING toxic about our relationship! Yeah, I beat people up that messed with you. I’m a fucking man, that’s what men do for their partners. And, yeah, maybe I could be less possessive and jealous, but don’t stand there and tell me you don’t fucking love the attention…”

[...]

[Z] “...C’mon, Baby Girl… You know we belong together. I’m willing to make that official, right here, right fucking now.”

[...?]

[He chuckles quietly and pushes closer]

[Z] “I ain’t proposing… not in the human way, as it were. No. I’m asking in the vampire way.”

[Pause!]

[Z] “Hey! Hey, easy… Relax. It doesn’t hurt. It’ll feel like one of our more… adventurous times together, ‘cept you’re gonna fall asleep for a little while. When you wake up, we’ll understand each other perfectly. No more fights. No more hurt. Just you and me versus the whole fucking world.”

[Pause!!!]

[Z, gentle] “You remember that thing you’d do to calm me down? How you’d hold my face between those cute little hands and tell me shit like, “I know you can do this. You’re amazing. You’ll get there!”? Let me return the favor…”

[He cups your face and whispers:]

[Z] “You and me… we belong together. Always have, always will… Cause no matter how you lit up on that stage in front of those ogling pricks, your eyes shone when you saw me in the audience. You were glad I was there. You wanted to prove to me that you were wild and adventurous, not just sweet, quiet Baby Girl. The same Baby Girl who’s heart fluttered when a certain delinquent offered her his jacket on a cold night… only for that same girl to chase said delinquent down because she was smart enough to realize vampires and freezing temps don’t mix super well… Do you regret that, baby…? Saving my life?”

[...]

[Z] “No… Because you love me. You’re always gonna love me, no matter how hard you try to move on. So instead of all this hurt… let me just fix it, once and for all.”

[He pushes closer again, breath rasping across your neck]

[Z] “One bite… Just one quick bite, baby… and everything will be OK.”

[Pause!]

[Z] “Shh… Baby, it’s 2 AM in downtown Everfall, in a monster district, no less. No one’s gonna come running at this time of night in this part of the city. Except for your big, strong boyfriend… I’m right here, ready to bring you home from that shitty studio apartment. I still got all your plants. I water ‘em. Keep Jasper from murdering them with his tiny murder mitts.”

[...]

[Z] “It would be so nice… wouldn’t it? You know you can’t get over me, Baby Girl. And I can’t get over you… So let’s stop being stupid and trying to hurt one another, alright? Mmh, I haven’t even kissed your neck yet, and I’m shaking from the smell… Our bodies feel so good together, it’s just our dumbass brains not talking the same language. That’ll fix it. You’ll never hurt again, never have to worry about being alone… Won’t that be nice?”

[...]

[Z] “Aww, Baby Girl… You really think I’m better than that?”

[Pause]

[Z] “That’s so sweet… but, baby…?”

[Pause?]

[Zane gives you a brief feral grin before he utters a quick, playful:]

[Z] “You’re dead wrong…!”

[He bites into you before you can react. Scream. Do anything. Nerves and synapses fire but you’re completely limp in his arms as that horror quickly gives way to bliss]

[Pause!!!]

[Z] “Mmh! Fuck, you taste incredible… See? Do you see how amazing we feel together? You’re not even fighting me…”

[...]

[Z] “No, no, it’s OK… You just rest against me while I drain you… I’ll get you home, you’ll come back by tomorrow, and it’ll all be OK. Now… mmh, I need more of you, you’re… fucking delicious.”

[...]

[You can feel your heart struggling to beat, hear your body dying, but this bliss makes it all seem so trivial]

[Z] “I have you, Baby Girl… It’s OK. You can die now. I’ll be right here when you come back.”

[He’s right. Why were you being so silly by trying to get away?]

[...]

[Z] “There you go… Love you, sweetheart. You’ll not forget this time… I promise.”

[You slip away]

[SFX: A soft thud]

[Z, fading away] “It’ll be perfect this time… Absolutely, wonderfully perfect, Baby Girl.”
