Context: You were a human science experiment for many years before being rescued by the supervillain Void. He's dangerously powerful, able to warp small pockets of reality but, with you, he has almost always been gentle. But, equally, sometimes he just... snaps and isn't the man you fell for anymore. Each time, the government takes you away, and, each time, Void comes to retrieve you. It's happening all over again... what will you choose, ultimately?

[Scene opens in a crowded sports stadium]

[SFX: General sports chatter followed by rumbling and screaming]

[Your mind is half on the game, the other half on him… When the stadium begins to rumble, you’re hardly surprised as two men seize you under the arms and drag you through the panicked crowd]

[P] “This is Clancey on Helicopter 22. A seismic event has begun at Rogers Stadium on 3rd Avenue! All readings indicate that Class 9 supervillain Void is approaching to reclaim Specimen ‘Muto’. Damnit, I knew taking them to a game was a terrible idea, ‘human enrichment’ or not! C’mon, kid, we have to get you to the copter before that lunatic shows up!”

[SFX: Panicked footsteps and the muffled sounds of a helicopter starting up]

[P] “Go, go, go! You know what happens to Void when he and Muto reunite! Motherfucker becomes too dangerous to take down!”

[SFX: Eldritch whispering]

“And I become so much happier…”

[P] “FUCK, HE’S HERE! JERRY-!”

[SFX: The helicopter stalling and whining]

[P] “Ah, damnit, he’s got a hold on the chopper! Just hang tight, Muto, and do NOT listen to him!”

[...]

[You can’t help but look into his eyes, at the very least. It’s agony]

“And there is my love… Taken for the, ah… fourth time, now? This time for over a year…”

[Pause!]

“Don’t… hurt anyone?”

[He struggles for a moment before he lets out a wild laugh]

“Didn’t I tell you, when we first met, that I don’t wish harm on those that have never personally crossed me! I did… I remember, no matter how much more I lose my damned mind… Oh, Muto, look at you in your little jersey… Gods, you’re so cute.”

[For a moment, he sounds tired. Almost heartbroken]

“...Has outside life been so good to you, darling? Or… do you still hate it? Hate having to pretend you’re fully human…? Hate having to smile and pretend you don’t still RAGE inside from the crimes done to you…?”

[...]

[P] “Do not listen to him!”

“Look.”

[His arms extend outward, voice soft]

[SFX: Heavy lights flicking on]

“See how the stadium lights up for you? So many faces caught in the warbling of, oh, so many different flower petals gently raining down, just for you. Just for you…”

[SFX: Millions of flower petals rushing into the air]

[P] “Do not listen to him! Whatever you do, do not listen to him! We’ve done this before, he never changes!”

[...]

[His sick, fanged smile never wavers]

“...Are they telling you that I’m bad again, darling…? I am a supervillain, it’s true… but was I ever bad to you? If I was… please tell me. I want to know why before I destroy myself for such an awful crime…”

[SFX: Fire blazing and people yelling in alarm]

[P] “Do NOT listen to him! That lunatic has no concept of love or mercy! He doesn’t have a fucking soul!”

[...]

“I’ll self-immolate, right this moment. Tell me if that’s what you want, darling. I’ll do it, right now.”

[It’s eerie knowing that your ex-lover isn’t bluffing, not for a moment]

[...]

[P] “No, do not even think about your past with him! If you start reminiscing, he’ll have his claws in you all over, so whatever you do, don-!”

[Note: Italics are for the Listener remembering their past]

Hmhm… there’s one more silly little laboratory destroyed. Poor creatures… I can’t imagine what they endured. Well, rest well animal friends, and know that you have been avenged. Oh…? What’s cowering in that enclosure…?

[SFX: Footsteps and panicked scrambling]

Oh… You’re a human? I… Wow, OK so, I’m a supervillain, right? So super evil, doesn’t pay parking tickets, knocks ice cream out of kid's hands, mass genocide, and so on. This disgusts me. This makes me glad I took the time to break their backs to let them crawl around for a bit before I killed them. Here, let me see you… Hmm?

[SFX: Rattling from within the enclosure]

Do I like what I see? Am… I looking for a mate? Hmhm, goodness… Alright, c’mon, you’re coming with me. You need proper medical and psychological evaluations and, if I take you to a normal hospital, you’ll be taken in for questioning. Gods know you’ve suffered enough. I’m a malicious bastard, but not to people that’ve done nothing to cross me.

[Pause]

Oh, for goodness… Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you. You have my word. Now, c’mon, I hate lingering around all these pills and syringes, blugh. I won’t even take aspirin if I can help it, it’s just wrong.

[Pause]

Pfft, oh, I’m funny, they say. Put on my coat and stop being cute. I’ll take it personally if you don’t

[Pause - time passes]

Oh, Muto… I forgot it was our special time… Apologies, I um… Guess I started crying… Oh, don’t give me that worried look, I’m fine. I just… miss my family, sometimes…

[Pause?]

…No, I… can’t visit them… anymore…

[...]

We can be family…? Eheh… That’s sweet, but… it might ruin all this raging desire I have in me for you, you know? Don’t want to be moaning the wrong name. Ow! Hey!

[Pause - More time passes]

[SFX: Desperate, muffled knocking]

Muto! C’mon, please come out! Please… I didn’t mean to kill him, I swear! He just… he hit a sore spot and my power just reacted… I’m so sorry, please just come out so we can talk about this. PLEASE!

[...]

[You focus back on the present. Your eyes meet. He’s still smiling]

“You remembered, didn’t you? How we laughed in secret. Danced late into the night. Then I’d get a little too angry at an enemy and you’d be sad for… a good bit… But then we’d always find our way back to each other. I think I deserve some praise for being as good as I’ve been given the atrocities committed upon me. You used to understand that fire… Don’t you remember how those scientists hurt you? If you’ve truly forgiven them, then you are far stronger than I am. But… I never told you what those atrocities were, did I?”

[Pause]

[P] “DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM! Jerry, get us untangled from this psychopath!”

[SFX: A struggling helicopter]

“It’s simple… So simple… Look at me, love. You know I’m not human. I pass, certainly, but you know that I’m like you. A science experiment… but that’s a half-truth.”

[P] “DON’T!”

[His smile fades, at last, twisting into a pained sneer]

“I came from a planet that no longer exists because of them. I… I’m the only one left and I…”

[SFX: Millions of petals fluttering upward at once]

“...aha… Look how the petals dance. It looks like the most beautiful eight-car pile-up I’ve ever seen…”

[...Pause?]

“Look at how beautiful… I didn’t realize I could do something so pretty with my power.”

[Pause!]

[He pauses, touching the corner of his mouth]

“Oh, I’m bleeding from the mouth. Hm. Well, if I had to guess, it’s probably the massive amounts of pills I’ve had to stomach to be able to sense you, even for just a few seconds… Hate the damned things but, for you, I’d do anything. I’ll burn every person down there alive if you wish it, I…”

[He giggles to himself, eyes wild]

“...Please come home. I’m so tired… and I need you. The pills make it so dark… but seeing you with the rest of the world dark feels so right. And we still need to watch all those movies together… It will be so nice.”

[...]

[His smile is tired but genuine as he opens his arms for you]

[P] “He’s starting to lose strength! Muto, you need to sit down and strap in! Muto? H-Hey, where are you going?!”

[His words grow distant as you leap toward the supervillain ready to kill thousands, just for you]

“Got you!”

[SFX: The helicopter lurching forward]

[He wraps you in his arms, content to drift]

“There you are… There you are, my everything… Come, let’s go home before these idiots waste any more of our precious time.”

[SFX: Teleport noises to gentle trickling water and peaceful music]

“Finally home… Finally, finally, finally home. Mmh… come here for a bit while the brain bleed fixes itself, won’t you?”

[SFX: Cloth rustling]

“Thank you… I love you, my little Muto. I’m gonna have a blood nap but, when I wake up, I’m gonna hold you against me until we fuse together. Mmh, but this is nice… I missed this… The pain was worth it… So very worth it.”

[With that, he falls into a peaceful sleep, snoring aside]

[Pause]

[Of all your inner demons… you must admit to him being the kindest of the lot]

“Mmh… it’s OK. We’re gonna make this all OK, sweetpea. For now, you just rest, OK?”

[...]

“There’s my Muto… We’ll set the world ablaze soon enough. For now… let me just enjoy you being home again… It gets so lonely when you’re, well… so desperately alone. But no matter! I know they put sick thoughts in your head, I know the lies they’ve told, and you’ve been kind enough to give me a chance to show you otherwise… I am grateful, dearest. Now… rest.”

[Pause]

[You curl up at his side. Nothing feels right. But everything feels right]

“Goodnight, my darling little existential crisis. Do be a love and stay this time, hm?”
