Hi all.
I live in a very small community, that I know of there are only 2 deaf/HOH individuals in my area. For further context, one of the individuals is mentally unstable and transient. The other is a friend of mines husband and knows only some ASL, the rest of the time he has signs he made up as his family never taught him. This is all to say, there really is no "deaf culture" in my town. I would like to become an interpreter (have wanted to for years) and am able to take courses through our areas community college system. I am not able to do the Bachelors program they have that partners with Gallaudet due to distance, cost and my children. I would be doing their 2 year interpreter certification program. My goal is to become an interpreter and get a job in the city (I sound so hick, lol). So....all that said just how important is the immersion aspect? I can see being able to attend some events in the city but these would be limited to me due to my schedule. I really want this and dont want my geographical location to be the barrier.
Thanks
