Chapter 116/CXVI “The Pardon” Reading Discussion (Spoilers up to Chapter 116)
Post Body

Wow! I can’t believe we’ve almost finished! Let’s do this!!

Synopsis:

Danglars awakens the next day and the bandits, somewhat comically, squeeze Danglars for the rest of his money. He calls for Luigi and finds out there Luigi follows a nameless leader. Danglars still wants to do anything to retain his last 50,000 francs and says he would rather die or be killed than be parted with it. Eventually, he breaks down and offers his last bit of money for food, only to be asked to repent from the faceless leader who then turns out to be… you guessed it… the Count. He gets him to repent, reveals himself as Edmond Dantes, allows him to keep his last 50,000 francs, feeds him handsomely, and turns him out on a road where he awakens thirsty and grayed the next morning.

Discussion Starters:

  1. This chapter definitely brings back all the images of Dantes locked away in prison as well as makes references to how his father died poor and starving. Danglars spent something close to 15 days in his prison cell. Do you think the count let him off too easily? Did he suffer enough for the things that he had done? Do you think that the repentance that he gave to the Count was heartfelt enough, or do you think he will go back to his old ways now that he has been let free?

  2. If you were in the Count's position, would you have done something different to Danglars? Would you have chosen to forgive him? Would you have chosen to forgive Fernand and Villefort as well?

  3. What do you think will happen to Danglars now? Are we to infer anything about what will happen/how Dumas feels about Danglars’ punishment by the last line of this chapter?

  4. It’s apparent that Dantes has been rethinking his feelings on revenge since the situation with the Villefort’s. We don’t get a lot of his inner thoughts here, but do you think that he is feeling satisfied or fulfilled with how things turned out, either with Danglars specifically or in general?

  5. Anything else you noticed while reading?

Last Line: “Leaning over the water to drink, he observed that his hair had turned grey.”

On a personal side note, I just wanted to thank you all for taking part in this journey with me and having me jump in as a moderator halfway through! I've wanted to read this book since college and it's been a really cool experience to not only read it over the course of the year but to hook into this group along the way, get to know you all a little bit, and have some great discussions on the content as well! Thank you all who contributed for making this an awesome experience for me!! <3
