The next day is Valentine's funeral. Dr. d'Avrigny comes by the Villefort residence to see the grieving family. Villefort lets him in and shows him Noirtier, who is still asleep. The Dr. assumes that Noirtier must have exhausted himself with his grieving the day before, but Villefort's remarks about his father being able to sleep well are more judgmental. Villefort proudly tells the Dr. that he hasn't slept; he's been up all night working on Benedetto's case. A distant cousin is brought in to oversee Valentine's funeral.
Neither Max nor the Count attend. Instead, the Count visits Danglars, to take out the remaining 5 million that he is owed. Danglars is in a awkward position. He has already promised the money to a charity, a hospice run by Monsieur de Boville. Not wanting to lose prestige, Danglars acts like everything is okay. He lets the Count take the 5 million out, and when Boville arrives he puts him off for another day. Once Boville has left, Danglars starts packing his bags to runaway. He leaves a letter for his wife to find after he is gone.
Discussion Prompts:
- Do you think the letter Danglars leaves will reveal any interesting information? Could Danglars surprise us all and have already guessed the Count's identity?
- Is the Count done with Danglars? Will he really just let him leave Paris?
- Why do you think Noirtier was able to sleep? Do you think the Count has filled him in on the Valentine situation?
- Assuming Valentine is safe, what do you think is going to happen to her next? The Count doesn't attend the funeral. Do you think this is a sign that he is finished with the Villeforts?
Final Sentence:
'It is still valid for another two months.'
The next reading discussion will go up on Saturday.
