We see how Andrea escaped Paris, coincidently heading in the same direction as Eugenie and Louise d'Armilly. He travels for most of the night, only stopping near daybreak when he reaches the Inn of the Bell and Bottle. While checking in, we learn that he is not the only late night guest, as a brother and sister duo have also arrived ahead of him.
The next morning, Andrea wakes up and sees gendarmes outside, waiting for him to come out. While trying to escape via a chimney he ends up climbing into the room of Eugenie and Louise, masquerading as the 'brother' and sister duo. In the privacy of their room, the women have been sharing a bed. They are shocked by Andrea's arrival, and ring the bell for help, altering the gendarmes to his whereabouts. As Andrea is arrested, he calls Eugenie by her full name, alerting the whole Inn and village to her true identity. An hour later, the two women continue on their journey, a crowd watching them leave as a spectacle.
Personally, I always find reading this chapter hard, because I always feel so bad for Eugenie.
Discussion Prompts:
From a modern perspective, how do you feel about Eugenie and Louise's relationship? Do you think the book is sympathetic to them or is it a product of it's time? Do you think this scene was meant to be funny when the story was originally published?
- Is Andrea's trial going to be big news in Paris? Will the Count use it as an opportunity to reveal more about the Danglars family or Andrea's past crimes?
- Do you this this is the end of the the Danglars revenge arc?
- Will Danglars send out people to bring Eugenie back?
Final Sentence:
By then, Andrea had already spend one night as a prisoner in the conciergerie.
The next chapter will go up on Saturday.
