Hi all! It’s exciting to see some new people chiming in! Welcome!
Discussion Question:
Whoah. Soo Noirtier has been helping Valentine build up an immunity to iocane powder, eh, uhm, I mean brucine. This has apparently been going on for a number of days but without her knowledge. Then she drinks a bunch of poisoned water. Her fainting spell could have been prevented if Noirtier warned her about his suspicions with Madame de Villefort. Why doesn’t he just come right out and tell her or warn her about the poison or tell her what he’s actually doing around building her immunity?
Do you think Valentine’s brucine immunity will be enough to save her from the poisoning?
We also learn that Eugenie is now lined up to marry Andrea who is actually her half-brother. How do you feel about the Count interfering with Eugenie, as she seems to be an innocent party to all of the horrible things her parents have done? Do you think he will save her from this marriage before it’s too late? He seems to be all about “divine justice”, but would he even care?
Some of the women in the chapter were discussing whether or not Albert should be held accountable for the sins of his father. I was also thinking about how much guilt Albert should be held accountable for, and how damning it was to his reputation to be tied to his father. They also discussed him disengaging from the duel he had started. Especially during this time period, does anyone have any information or thoughts on whether or not abandoning a duel was a reputation killer? Do you think it be better to live a dishonored or to follow through with a duel you didn’t want to do?
Any other thoughts on this chapter?
Final Line:
'Just as I said!' Mme de Villefort exclaimed. 'Poor child!'
