The chapter begins with Danglars and Andrea Cavalcanti discussing marriage and potential future business investments. It appears that Danglars sees Eugenie's hand in marriage as a way to solve all his business issues. After this meeting, the time comes for Andrea to make his monthly payment to Caderousse. Instead of following the rules, Caderousse makes Andrea come to him. Andrea gives into Caderousse's demands for more money. Andrea reveals that he believes that the Count of Monte Cristo is his father and that he intends to leave Andrea money in his will. Despite this, Andrea helps Caderousse set up a plan to burgle the Count's primary residence, drawing up plans and even telling Caderousse when the house will be vacant.
Discussion Prompts:
- Do you think Danglars has Eugenie's best interests in mind when it comes to this new engagement to Andrea?
- Why would the Count let Andrea see his will in the first place? Do you think letting Andrea believe that he is the Count's own son is part of the greater revenge scheme?
- Do you think Caderousse is really going to attempt to burgle the Count's residence?
- Would the Count really leave his home as vulnerable to robbers as Andrea makes it sound?
- Were you surprised at how Andrea acted here while believing the Count is his father? Has he no loyalty or feelings for anyone but himself?
- Do you think the Count knows that Andrea is in contact and working with Caderousse?
- If there is anything else you noticed or want to talk about from this chapter, please tell us in the comments.
Final Sentence:
'I don't think he'll be sorry to inherit; and the person who brings the day closer when he is to get his hands on five hundred thousand francs will not be his worst enemy, either. '
The next reading discussion will go up on Saturday.
