This chapter brought us a variety of revelations.
Discussion starters:
1.) Is that it for Caderousse? Do you think the Count will intervene?
2.) For those who have been keeping track of women in the book, we lost La Carconte but (kind of?) have gained Haydée. We only got a little, but do you have any thoughts so far? Has the Count moved on for Mercédès, or is Haydée part of his ploy to build himself up and impress?
3.) The Count has played (at least) two important roles in Bertuccio's life without him realizing it. Do you think he knew about his attack at the Auteuil residence before hearing his story the first time as Busoni?
4.) Other points of discussion? Does Villefort yet live? Is the Count equating his own vengeance with God's, or does he believe his own ability (Faria's gifts) to do so is fueled by God?
Final Line:
In another hour every light in the house was extinguished, and it might have been thought that all its inmates slept.
The next discussion will be up this Saturday.
