I particularly enjoyed Eugénie in this chapter, and how frank she was with her father. It was refreshing. What do you think her secret is that she alluded to when she agreed to go through with the wedding?
I found the chapter a bit confusing, and I read it twice to make sure I didn't miss something. It seems Danglars is on the edge of ruin, and he needs the three million to come in from Andrea, but his daughter made him promise not to touch the capital. Danglars thinks just having the three million come in will be enough to keep others investing with him despite all of his recent losses. I don't know how he can expect to give a 10% return on the three million without investing it, but okay. I assumed the three million was going to invest in the railroad. Did anyone take what was going on there differently?
We only ever saw the count manipulate the telegraph one time. We also saw the count report that a bank that owed Danglars money had collapsed. But now Danglars is on the edge of ruin. Do you feel satisfied assuming the count is behind it all, or are you a little frustrated we didn't get to see more of what he did? To me, it feels like Dumas had one idea for how he could manipulate Danglars, but he couldn't think of anything else, and he's trusting us to just assume the count is such a badass that he did a number of other similar things. But I would have liked to see them. I'd like to know if the Count spent 10 or 20 million just to make sure that Danglars went bankrupt, which I actually think would be amazing. If he's so crazy that in his pursuit for revenge he's waste a fortune just to rob Danglars of his, it would be really telling. Far more interesting, at least to me, than for him to have just been clever and chipped away at Danglar's wealth without it costing him much.
Last line:
We have seen them at Villefort’s; they proceeded then on their course.
The next discussion will be up on Wednesday.
