Chapter 86 “The Trial” Reading Discussion (Spoilers up to Chapter 86)
Post Body

Since spoiler markings aren't shown on mobile, please use the Spoilers Topic to discuss events from later in the book.

Discussion starters:

1.) Do you have any thoughts about Fernand in this chapter? We haven't seen much of him.

2.) Do you think it's a problem for the Count that he came up in the trial, as Haydée's owner/other father? Or is it enough that he was with Albert when it happened and Haydée claimed the Count might have disapproved.

3.) On that note, do you think the Count made a show to disapprove of doing something like this, knowing she would do it anyway, or do you think he instructed Haydée? Perhaps him leaving also gave her leeway to do this if she thought she wasn't supposed to?

4.) A couple of quote interested me: "Truly generous men are always ready to be compassionate when the misfortune of their enemy surpasses the limits of their hate."

Do you think that is a comment on the Count?

"Beauchamp related to the young man all the facts we have just narrated; his story, however, had over ours all the advantage of the animation of living things over the coldness of dead things."

This stood out as strange, an author referring to his writing as a dead thing within the book itself. Is this perhaps related to some of Dumas' style that seems drawn from theatre?

5.) Other points of discussion?

Final Line:

"She heard the count’s sentence pronounced without betraying an expression of joy or pity; then drawing her veil over her face she bowed majestically to the councillors, and left with that dignified step which Virgil attributes to his goddesses.”
