Chapter 75 “The Judicial Enquiry” Reading Discussion (Spoilers up to Chapter 75)
Post Body
I apologize for the delay, I got locked out of my account. What a chapter.
- I love that the whole reason Villefort put the marriage together was to wash away any suspicion that his father was involved in the general’s death. Mostly to protect himself, but it’s an extension of protecting his father, but then the old man just comes right out and admits that he did it.
- I was feeling really bad for poor Franz, he seems like a good man, trying to do everything right and honorably, and then to get hit with that.
- That was our first actual dual. Any predictions on who else we might see dual?
- The Count wasn’t involved in the destruction of the marriage as far as we can tell, but surely this is a devastating blow to Villefort. I wonder if Dumas’ intent was to say that this too is part of Providence’s work to punish him.
Last line:
“Villefort opened the door and fled, for he had just had an impulse to stifle the last dregs of life still remaining in the old man’s fearsome heart"
The next discussion will be up on Wednesday
