Since spoiler markings aren't shown on mobile, please use the Spoilers Topic to discuss events from later in the book.
Discussion starters:
1.) This chapter was a bit like some others lately, in that it could have almost been a self-contained story. What did you think of the gardener/signal giver? This man with "no ambition" seems like a contrast to a lot of our characters.
2.) What do you think was the major goal here? I'm not sure Danglars lost all that much money, but did he lose credibility? (And does anyone happen to know if this was illegal financial activity, with Debray warning him?)
3.) I feel like this chapter showed a side of the Count I'm not sure we've seen directly yet. How do you feel about the Count bribing that guy? Was it ultimately good (he will live a better life), or bad (it was against the man's inclinations, and he had seemed happy enough, anyway), or are you more neutral?
4.) Other points of discussion?
Final Line:
“I have just discovered how a gardener may get rid of the dormice that eat his peaches.”
The next discussion will be up this Saturday.
