Discussion starters:
1.) We basically saw two separate stories in this chapter. That of Luigi and Teresa, and that of Carlini and Rita, with a crossover of Cucumetto. What do you think of these characters, and did you read them in relation to other characters like Dantès and Mercédès? Or did you notice any themes, like revenge, that are significant to the greater book? Why do you think so much time was spent on these stories?
2.) Does anyone have thoughts on bandits and these country peasants, who have an affinity despite the ransacking of their daughters? Rita's father didn't even show anger about Carlini being a bandit (it was the opposite, actually). Was it somewhat common to be a bandit? It sounded like Luigi already knew several of the bandits, as if they were just regular guys from around the area.
3.) What do you think of the way Dantès is sort of working subtly in the background of everything despite being the main character?
4.) Other points of discussion?
Final Line:
So saying, the two young men went down the staircase, and got into the carriage.
Next discussion will be up this Monday.
