We still need one more person to help out with the reading discussions. If you’d like to help out as a mod, please send us a message.
Discussion starters:
1.) Caderousse is forgiven and even receives the whole diamond. After all of Edmond’s personality changes, would you still have thought him to be forgiving? Would you have forgiven him too?
2.) Danglars wanted to imprison Edmond because of his position and Fernand because of love. Danglars doesn’t stay on the ship however but looks for opportunities elsewhere and Fernand does seem to forget about Mércèdes at first. What are your thoughts about this?
3.) Caderousse tells us that the bad guys have become rich and powerful while the good guys have become poor or unhappy. Is this pessimistic view a reflection of the general thoughts during that time when Napoleon was exiled for good and the second restoration began? Or is this just something Dumas wanted to explore?
Final Line:
‘Fifty thousand francs!’ murmured La Carconte, when she was alone. ‘That is a lot of money… but it is not a fortune.’
Next discussion will be up this Saturday.
