Chapter 17 “The Abbe’s Cell” Reading Discussion (Spoilers up to Chapter 17)
Post Body

We’re still looking for some extra help with moderating this sub. So if you’re interested please send us a message.

Discussion starters:

1.) Edmond still thinks that the sun revolves around the world even though the latest theory on heliocentrism was at that time already around for some centuries. Do you think this was a normal thing for the common people to not know of, or is Dumas showing how uneducated Edmond was before meeting the Abbé?

2.) The Abbé thinks that his work on the monarchy in Italy is something groundbreaking. Do you know any real-world examples of people who just as the Abbé wrote their masterpiece in prison? Do you think Edmond will take this work with him outside of prison or will it be lost forever?

3.) Edmond learns a lot from the Abbé in this chapter. How do you think this might come in handy later in the book after he gets out of prison (I haven’t read the books before but I’m fairly optimistic that Edmond will leave prison.)

Final Line:

Dantès took the abbé’s hand; he was reassured with a smile, and he left, in a spirit of respectful obedience and devotion to his old friend.
