Chapter 28 / XXVIII - “The Prison Register” reading discussion
Post Body

1) Why does the narrator take such care not to identify the abbé in Chapter 27 or the Englishman in Chapter 28 as Dantès?

2) In the prison chapters, the narration gives deep insight into Dantès’ psyche; here, the narration is limited to observation. Does this shift have symbolic meaning?

Final sentence of chapter:

”He got up so that M. de Boville could take his place at the desk, where he sat down and proceeded, as quickly and simply as possible, to draw up the necessary paper, while the Englishman was counting the bank notes onto the edge of the filing cabinet.”
