1) Abbé Faria, with his impressive knowledge of languages, literature, history, philosophy, and science, is practically the second coming of Leonardo da Vinci, while Dantès isn’t even aware of heliocentrism. Why does Dumas draw such an extreme contrast between the two prisoners?
2) I’ve mentioned twinning in previous posts; is Faria a time-shifted / alternate universe twin of Dantès? A sort of Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come? (I can’t find anything concrete on whether Dumas would’ve read A Christmas Carol, but it seems quite possible…)
3) Building off a question u/ZeMastor posed last year, does knowing that Villefort betrayed him make Dantès better or worse off emotionally?
Final sentence of chapter:
”Dantès took the abbé’s hand; he was reassured with a smile, and he left, in a spirit of respectful obedience and devotion to his old friend.”
