1) What do you make of the references, at the beginning of the chapter, to a spider weaving its web and the slow drip of water from the ceiling of Dantès’ cell?
2) Is it possible Abbé Faria is telling the truth about his treasure?
3) Earlier I mused on the importance of character names; here, the new governor strips away the prisoners’ names and refers to them only as numbers. What effect do you think this dehumanization will have on Dantès? (And any wild theories as to why Dumas chose 34??)
Final sentence of chapter:
”He became number 34.”
