1) Why do the characters continually refer to Napoléon as “the usurper” instead of referring to him by name? Does this tendency have echoes in other novels?
2) Louis XVIII “crossed his arms, as Napoleon would have done,” suggesting another character doubling. Does the looming battle between the king and the usurper reflect a looming battle between Dantès and Villefort? If so, which of the two is the king and which the usurper?
3) Anybody want to see Villefort and Danglars in a cage match of wits?
Final sentence of chapter:
“‘Leave us, Germain,’ said Villefort. The servant went out with obvious signs of astonishment.”
