Official servers really being taken down?

I'm new, well, new in the sense of ARK timeline. Are the official servers actually being taken down? Is it worth investing in them at all still?
I've been using single player for a few weeks now, and my God it's annoying to have to play for 5 hours straight just to rebreed a Dino, or for plants to grow, or resources to come back.
I'd obviously jump on the opportunity to go official, but if it's really being nuked I don't want to throw away all the progress I've made
