You knew this was coming. Actually, you probably didn’t think I’d actually go ahead and make another one of these huh? Well, here I am the friendly (not really) interdimensional demigod who happens to be decent at writing things on the internet and today we are talking about how to make a story.
So why should you even listen to me what the hell do I know about telling a good story? It’s a fair point and I’ll be covering it briefly without giving too much away about myself since I’m rather fond of keeping my projects away from me as a person. I’ve been writing stories for near a decade and have spent the past 5 years writing and prepping a story which has just recently begun as a web series (who knows you may hear about it very soon). But in my experience stories are one of the biggest drives not only in this community but all of humanity. Stories are part of what we are as a species, it’s literally everywhere: Music, Art, Movies, any creative medium. Even HISTORY is technically storytelling from the victor's side.
ARG’s are no different. While many have succeeded without stories (this is if you consider things such as Cicada 3301 and Red Triangle ARG’s which I personally don’t), they will stifle under the need for one. To name a few both old and new ARG’s that have a story in one way or another that have done well we have postCONTENT, TheSunVanished, Marble Hornets (personally a work of art), TribeTwelve (another work of art imo), ECKVA, PETSCOP, HIMM, H00H, Daisy Brown, Seventybroad, Alantutorial, AshVlogs, etc. You’ve probably heard of at least one of these at some point. These all have stories to different degrees and many still have a very deep puzzle and discovery elements involved. The point is, you don’t need to write a novel but even the most simple story will be beneficial and drive a larger audience to your project. Everyone can tell a story, what is yours about? Is it a psychological drama, a gripping horror, a calming adventure. That’s another point. Not every ARG has to be a horror cult story. If you can tell one that is fun go ahead but I see so few of these new and exciting stories that take new routes. Don’t be scared or pressured by past experiences or the norm of the community. Break boundaries, break rules, and you WILL break expectations. TheSunVanished isn’t a horror, it’s a psychological thriller and one that was well done. Seventybroad was a psychological drama, it was well done. People crave new things. Why not make a quality drama ARG? A slice of someone's life intertwined with fantastical experiences. I’m available to consult with you about a story anytime you need. I didn’t give many guidelines this week because storytelling at it’s best doesn’t need a guideline: it just needs a story.
So for the entirety of March, I will be consulting on stories you guys have in mind. It will stay between us and I hope to help many of you. If you are interested I can be contacted on Twitter at @RegDimension or Discord at RegularDimension#3884. See you out there, stay mysterious guys.
