Having a hard time finding a good AR9. Should I just build? And any recommendations for parts. Budget but reliable build preferred

Been looking for a good decent AR9 but the ones that catch my eye are never available and I’m not looking to spend over 1600 for an AR9 of any brand. Just need something for home defense and that my wife can also use. Definitely want a short barrel. Thinking about building as well but I’ve never built my own before. Looking for advice
