Forward: I was dedicating this planet to mastering actual combat and it’s taught me some interesting things about how to strategize both in and out of combat. This is a not so short account of how the hex-movement system saved not only my campaign but also the previous lives of my bug babies.
So working on my 6th xeno-kir’ko world and things were going smooth. I took lessons learned from here and this time had the wherewithal to recruit some more scouts to map out the continent and grab free loot. Well things went pretty smooth for the first 30 turns. I had FOBs on all the Cosmite deposits on the planet. The Dvar, peace loving xenophiles that they were, didn’t like that and started a war. Dvari production is truly nightmarish thing to have wielded against you. As I was staring down about 6 armies laden with NPC troops, I had just realized that my plan to back cap their capital was taking a very dire turn.
The Amazons sent 4 stacks to come play as well because I guess that have a dwarf fetish and finally want to incorporate men or something idk. So I prepare my Anus and sally out to go meet them away from the prying eyes of turrets. Watching them crawl out from the fog of war from whatever orgy they had going on back there. The first taking back the Dvari capital, then the rest lining up just one turn away from stomping my big face into goop.
Hark! What is this I lay my insectoid eyes upon!? The Dvari battle formation has a weakness! Their faction leader is on an outside hex with three of them right next to him just as free and open as they can be. Hold on I have EXACTLY three armies, this guy’s only getting one army for back up! It was the greatest battle that no one saw. Plus we got two xeno babies out of the deal so it was worth losing those hidden. Fun fact, hidden out-range most units in the game and make for good cover fire while you get your guys in place.
So next comes the stragglers because everyone else bolted. Two mecha armies in my face, luckily I’m prepared and all my armies are doing corrosive and/or arc damage. Wait a second…I have three heroes with fury of the swarm and lots of other goodies. Let’s see what happens if I align everyone in a nice hex and use shrouded step riiiiight in the middle. Their first actual turn of fighting saw them do a collective of 30 damage and most of that was from the one rocket that didn’t graze. The entire planet is at war with me and the Dvari leader is down and out. Migrate.
Now the entire continent is up for grabs, two faction leaders are probably being cloned in a vat, and I have many new mouths to feed. All thanks to the extremely odd choice of using hexagonal movement. Ooh look food!!!
