You are both right, talib does mean student. They were young men educated in Saudi funded madrasas who were "indoctrinated" (my choice of word others may disagree) in the wahabi sect of islam, who fought as co-beligerants during the soviet invasion of Afghanistan with groups like the northern alliance against the soviets. All the groups who fought against the soviets were considered Mujahedeen.
Once they kicked the soviets out they then fought against and subsequently won the Afghan civil war taking "control" of Afghanistan.
