This isn't "Everybody loves Raymond" or a family sitcom. This is "Angel".
If I wanted parental advice I'd read Dr Spock.
First episode of season 3 disc 5:
They're fighting a band that features Bill and Ted. Angel says "Bloodaholic".
Dear God.
Wes kidnapped Connor without informing Angel of his reservations makes no sense.
So, in other words, it's a preachy season? I agree.
It's not about the storylines, it's about how they were executed and how they were written.
And don't even get me started on the whole Connor thing.
In the right hands, yes, I'm sure season 3 could have been great. In the hands of Joss Whedon, it probably would have been, but Mere Smith had most of the writing credits that season. I think it's fair to say that he's not very good. There's a reason he hasn't been involved in the writing process in 12 years.
It felt forced back when it happened, and it felt forced now.
I'd rather he found a stake to the heart than Cordelia. To believe that Angel and Cordelia would be together is asking a lot of the audience.
The show didn't need it. It's just completely lazy writing. It's like with "Friends" when they got Rachel and Jiey together. It made zero sense. It was just a way of filling in the season. Angel having feelings for Cordelia is our "Rachel and Joey" moment.
Season 3 had no arc. First, it was Billy, which had the potential of him being the big bad. Then Holtz. Then his appearances were fleeting. Then there was the Angel/Cordelia romance.
Then, there was the whole humour vibe.
The whole season was fragmentated.
It was just a poor season, and as a writer, I didn't buy any of it.
Oh. He was different, alright. He was so different that it was he was written by people who weren't familiar with the character.
If the whole Angel/Cordy romance is in season 3, then it's the.Cherry on the icing on the shit cake.
And the whole love triangle of Fred, Wes and Gunn. Urgh. What is this? "Angel's Creek"?
Once I'm done with this season (I'm on disc 6), I'm going to create a post citing the stupidest scenes in "Angel". I already have 4 or 5 taken from season 3.
I'm not quite hater. Even at gunpoint, k couldn't name a bad episode of BtVs, but season 3 of "AtS" has really.rubbed me up the wrong way.
Yeah. I'm a writer, so I know how the general process works.
I've watched and rewatched the 3rd season a few times. I don't think I've hated it as much as I do with this rewatch.
From the "old Angel" with "I have friends," leading to the reveal of the rest of the cast coming through the door, to the talking hamburger. This truly is a weird season.
Yeah. I think you're right about "Firefly". I've cross referenced the times and they do align.
It would be interesting to know just how much of season 3 that Joss knew about.
Seasons 1 and 2 were great, but it just fell off a cliff with season 3.
That's the thing with BtVs, it may have had a weak season here or there, but even then it was still better than the majority of the shows on the air. Season 3 of "Angel" was just really... bad. I might skip it in my next rewatcg.
I'm an original watcher of "Angel".
I've rewatched it a few times. I'm on season 3 and I never noticed how bad this season is.
It's so unstructured. Billy had potential to be the Big Bad, so did Holtz, but neither of them are.
There are three episodes which are completely the same, with Gunn, Angel and Cordelia realising that they're "family". It's so cringeworthy. Then the Cordelia sitcom.
It's obvious that they're just playing it for laughs.
It's apparent that Joss was more focused on BtVs season 6 to really give his input into season 3 of "Angel".
Seasons 1 and 2 were excellent. Season 3 is a total and unequivocal mess.
Can't remember much about seasons and 5. I Hope they're better. I assume that season 5 is good, as that's when BtVvs was finished and Joss had more input.

Yeah, but the difference is that BtVs did it right and they did it well. AtS season 3 was awful.
I don't have an issue with the theme. I have an issue with the crappy execution and writing.
A good writer can make you believe in Hobbits and Wizards. A bad writer can't convince you that Johnny loved Marie
