Disappearing save files? RG 405M

Hey I'm playing Golden Sun on my stock OS 405m.
I noticed my save files keep disappearing. I'll literally save my game then keep playing, and go to save a few minutes later and there's no existing save file.
Should I use save states instead? I don't see the option anywhere on gba.
