What do you think people will looked back upon fondly 50 years from now? I can think of a couple of different things.
1) A free and open internet. I think we take for granted that we enjoy an open and free internet. I think over time, not too long from now, the internet will become heavily regulated by private companies to the point that people won't want to use it anymore, unless they have to. (Work, from example). Imagine something like what's going on in China, but much more censored, controlled and regulated. The only things you'd be able to look at that is recreational would be 'educational' programming that wouldn't be educational to begin with. A lot of religious programming and patriotic propaganda. I know some idiots are going to scream from the hilltops 'duh, but it's already propaganda. Wake up sheeple!' No dumbass... that bullshit. I'm talking you won't be able to look up anything without paying absurd fees and has been approved by the state. Movies and TV shows determined as 'problematic' will be removed. (Think of HBO Max removing Gone With The Wind). And if you do find a way to download something without approval, there would be severe and strict punitive measures. I'm talking prison sentences that span years, if not decades.
2) The ownership of property. If things continue to go in the direction that they're going now, not too long from now, people will only be able to afford to lease things like houses and cars. Kind of like video games. That's going to be the testing ground of it all. A lot of video games are testing the idea of leasing video games. The most glaring example I can think of is something like Rocksmith Plus. For those who don't know, Rocksmith is a series of video games that teaches you how to play guitar. Think of guitar hero, but you use an actual guitar to play the game. The first two games were a huge success. Especially the 2nd one. However, the latest incarnation (or some would argue abomination, including myself) called "Rocksmith Plus", is a video game/streaming service. So in order to play the game, you are required to pay a monthly fee and will be required to be online to use it. There's already been a major backlash from fans because of this. Now, imagine the same thing, but, with a car or a house. Even your phone. Not the service, but the phone itself. The service will come with an absurd fee as well. It will never be paid off. You never actually own these things. You will have to pay the fee indefinitely, and if you decide not to pay it or can't afford it anymore, that's when the repo man comes. Hell, even a monthly fee just to enter the grocery store. Not actually buy food, but just walk into the building. Similar to a gym membership. This would serve as a deterrent from homeless/illegal immigrants/'undesirables'.
What are some examples that you think will be romanticized 50 years from now??
