I recently started a small prop trading firm on the side while at college, and I wanted to hire a programmer to help me with coding some necessary algorithms. I’m fairly good myself, but wanted a dedicated programmer.
One of the best programmers I personally know is this guy who I was a freshman with. He was convicted of rape, and as a result got expelled and had to do some community service.
This is part of the reason why I decided to hire him: aside from his top notch skills, his lack of other prospects due to his conviction and lack of formal education means a) I can get him for fairly cheap without having to offer equity and b) he’s unlikely to quit because his other prospects are severely limited.
Since I hired him, he’s been doing really well, but a lot of people I know have expressed anger that I would hire a convicted rapist. I think business is business. AITA?
Having sex with someone against their will should make you a pariah for life. They’re dangerous
Op… you should get evaluated. And sterilized.
YTA. Soft YTA? I guess my first thought is that you’re just looking to underpay someone. Which ick. And then the convicted rapist thing… this is a mess.
I agree that’s decent. It’s the phrasing of how you COULD under pay him. Despite the monetary value, it’s the principle of the matter and speaks deeply to your character. No offense.

I think smart business practices reduce inflation, and support their workers. You say he paid his due yet you’re still defining him by his past mistake ( I would) but I wouldn’t hire him to save a buck. It’s all principles and matters
