To preface: my grandparents grew up very poor in a part of the US that was deeply impacted by the depression.
My grandparents have given my siblings, cousins, and I lots of little gifts for Christmas each year. Most of the time it's a bar of Dial soap, hotel toothpaste, or little kitchen gadgets that I never and up using. I've ended up with four of the same fleece jackets from Costco because my grandpa forgets that he buys me the same one each year.
Don't get me wrong, I love my grandparents. They're in their late 80s and I will never tell them that I don't like the little things they give me because I want to be able to cherish every minute I have left with them. Since they grew up in a very impoverished place, they like to see their kids and grandkids open lots of gifts each year, because it was something they didn't get to do. They worked hard and became successful in their fields and retired with enough money to live comfortably in retirement.
My sister said that I'm an asshole after I told her that I didn't like all the little things I get for Christmas each year. She and her partner live in a large house, but I have a small apartment, and adding many little things stresses me out because I have to find a place for them or throw them away. This doesn't make me appreciate my grandparents any less, I know why they enjoy giving us gifts, and the joy they get from watching us open them. I just feel bad that a lot of the things they give me end up being thrown away within a couple of months.
