So for the past six months, I have been working at this mom and pop video game store and it's pretty solid. During my time at this job, I have been in the hiring process for another job that will get my career going, which management has always known about, and is super important for context later. About a month ago, our dedicated opener left and his spot was open. I leaped at the opportunity for the shift, but a new guy who'd only been there a couple of weeks wanted the spot too. My GM decided to give us both our own "trial weeks" to test out the shift and see how we both liked it and decide who would get it. Before I even started my trial week, my GM told me I was already in the lead to get it. I do not even get halfway through my trial week when my GM pulls me aside and tells me they are giving it to the new guy because I am leaving in x amount of time anyway. I was heartbroken and angry at that because: 1.) They allowed me to compete for the shift even though management ALWAYS knew that I was in the hiring process for another job for my career, and 2.) They got my hopes up telling me I was in the lead to get the shift before even starting it. After this, I just started putting in the bare minimum of work. I used to go above and beyond for them from time to time but for the past month, I have only been doing my job, nobody else's, and not picking up extra shifts whenever management calls me and letting it go to voicemail. A few days ago, my GM pulls me aside, telling me I am not showing "initiative" for them by not answering their calls and helping out when people call out, but I'm doing this because of the two reasons I listed above. I am not mad about them giving the shift to a guy who is committed to staying, that is not it, it is because they let me compete for a shift I wanted only to tear it away from me before I complete my trial week and they get my hopes up before it even begins. So... AITAH?
