So first time posting so sorry if it sounds weird. I (22y male) work retail at a store and much like any other retail store it's employees are mostly women. I won't lie I do flirt and am nice to pretty much all of them. And by flirt I mean I say hi, compliment their appearance and ask about their days, and make jokes. Everyone seemed to enjoy it without any problems and I never dated any of them because I don't date coworkers. (Also let's be honest they probably aren't interested, I'm not a 10)
A new worker was hired recently and she is 23f and it was my task to train her. Now she was cute but I did not want to flirt with her as she was new but I was nice to her shoeing her how to do stuff at work and how breaks and scheduling worked. We exchanged phone numbers and I told her I would cover any shift she needed as I need the money for my car. We then added each other on Facebook which I even do with my male coworkers.
One day on my way to work I messaged her on Facebook and asked her if she had a shift for me to cover this week. She never responded. I didn't think much of it because people don't use Facebook.
A week later my male coworker pulled me aside and told me I should avoid talking to any of the women at work but wouldn't tell me why. Normal we talked about everything but it was weird he was secretive about this. Later he told me the women at work were calling me a creep and said I was problematic. Then my boss called me in and told me he didn't believe this was true but that he was told I was harassing the coworker and I should avoid unnecessary conversations.
I was furious because I felt like I was going to lose my job. But I told my boss I promised this wouldn't be a problem again. I then stopped talking to all the women at work and only talked to the men at work. I also blocked my new coworker on everything including her number to avoid being accused.
I was then confronted by her asking me if I blocked her. I told her yes and to refrain from talking to me from now on if it isn't work related as I don't intend to lose my job over her or anyone. I later found out ever woman at work was blaming her for me giving everyone the cold shoulder and hated her. The other women continued to try and talk to me at work but I refused to engage with any of them.
Now I just go to work and home
Am I the asshole?
Edit: This happened back when I was actually younger before I was married, I'm 27 now but I always wondered if I handled this correctly because I now don't really feel comfortable at work talking to people.
