Should you pull banners when you can or save up for characters?

My experience with other gachas made me want to save for characters I really like and I’m wondering if the same applies here. I like Vala but I don’t love her enough to spend diamonds getting her. But I’ve also heard that she really helps especially in early game. Thanks!
