I’ve been hyped for the Jokers as soon as I saw them in The Owen bracket. However, it may just be me, but it feels like they’re being downplayed a bit. Tony hasn’t gone out of his way to put the Jokers over or discuss major developments. Because of this, Im split between two trains of thought:
- The Jokers are wrestlers that are meant to further current storylines (Joe and Lethal), or help their opponent (Britt v. Rebel or some unknown local talent). By underplaying the jokers, while we may complain, we can’t say Tony Khan promised us something and didn’t deliver.
- The Jokers are major surprises, but, having learned his lesson, Tony Khan isn’t hyping things up in case the Jokers are a let down to some but not others (Keith Lee, Christian, etc). Someone like Miro, Claudio, or Gargano, or someone from NJPW (given a lot of the roster was at the D.C. PPV Saturday) on the men’s side, Athena or Candace LeRay on the women’s side.
In some ways, the complete lack of details makes the Jokers’s identities way more interesting than when a debut takes place.
AEW fans, what are your thoughts with how the Jokers have been “hyped.” Do you get the sense they’ve been somewhat underplayed compared to past scenarios? Or am I just being crazy (which is also a strong possibility, haha).
Edit: When discussing Joe’s opponent, I meant someone to help further that feud, not Lethal or Dutt. Sorry for not being clear.
