I've considered getting tested for ADHD (and getting treated if I do have it) for a while, but my family discourages me to do so. I was told by an older sibling that any medications that affect our brain are just like taking drugs, so she doesn't recommend that I seek it.
Well it depends on what education you're seeking or expected to seek (if they want you to go to college and absolutely can't stomach an alternative they've waived any right to complain), how severe the problems are and how socially adept you are.
There's a lot of people that came out fine and simply quirky and funny because of their unmedicated ADHD.
There's also many that wound up on the street, sweeping floors or in the military because the combination of severe symptoms and external demands lead to them becoming incapable of utilizing their talents.
I'm absolutely not camp "meds solve everything & are always the best option". I simply believe that they're one tool that can help a person operate in a way that is adaptive. If you find a different way, good. But it shouldn't be dismissed.
Only you know what you want to do and how to get there.
