Too honest?

I have been told that I am “too direct” or “honest” with my FWBs. I definitely don’t do it out of malice and I would never want anyone to feel disrespected. For example, I have had FWBs come over for the purpose of hooking up. However, when I say “Should we get started?” and I am met with a look of surprise or disbelief. I don’t know if maybe it’s too soon in the interaction or if there is a specific social etiquette that I’m supposed to follow before leading up to us having sex. Has anyone else experienced either being considered too honest or impulsive? What do you suggest?
