Is the UK the worst place in the developed world to get treated for ADHD?

Post Body

Guys, I was living in South America and, by chance, found out about ADHD, went to the neurologist and was diagnosed with ADHD combined (not sure of the name people use), but I'm more on the inattentive side. The medication changed my life and I studied as much as I could about the condition. It explains so much. I am not a lazy loser. It gave me hope!!

In South America I could just pay to see my neurologist the same day or week. The medication was prescribed, and I could go the same day and buy it.

I didn't want to come back to the UK as I knew it would be hell. I'm stuck between leaving and going to a country where I can be properly treated and productive in life, or staying at home in the UK with my family, who have various illnesses and old age, and going nowhere in life (due to lack of treatment).

I don't want to miss the last years of my grandparents, or even of my father (his illness is 100% fatal if not treated). However, I can't afford to go private. My financial situation has gone to the dogs and I need treated to get back on track. My level of motivation is around 20%.

My GP, thankfully, gave me a one month's supply of Concerta. In South America, I was also given 20mg of Methylphenidate IR as an add-on to be taken in the morning and afternoon. Although I'm thankful I got the Concerta, the doctor wouldn't give me the extra methylphenidate I need. I've sent all the documentation, but he's scared of prescribing too much as he's not a psychiatrist. He's a wonderful doctor, but I'm waiting to hear back on whether he can even give me the Conserta on a monthly basis. The Concerta will take away some of the lack of focus and keep me going for 3-4 hours a day. I'm on 54mg a day. I used to take Vyvanse 70mg once daily, and when I moved to another country, had to switch to Concerta 54mg once a day with the auxiliary of 20mg Rubifen (basically Ritalin IR) to be taken up to 3 times daily.

Have any of you guys in the UK managed to get your meds straight from your GP on a consistent basis? My area doesn't even treat ADHD, and to get treated you have to live near the capital, and that Trust has a 3-year waiting list for an initial consultation!!!

Help guys. As I said, I avoided returning to the UK for this reason. I knew it would be hell. ADHD is a joke in this degrading country
