I have been encouraged to write in a journal every day. My first impulse is that it is extremely difficult to fill a blank page. Which, turned out to be exactly my experience. This was made worse by feeling frustrated by writing whatever facts about the day I could come up with in 5 minutes, bad doodling, just waiting for the timer to go off.
I have been listening to a book that, (again) mentions journaling as a good thing to do... Blech...
However, the author then discusses using writing prompts to think about/deal with relationship.
It turns out, using writing prompts has a name: Structured Journaling Prompts. Use your favorite search engine to find lots of prompts that should inspire reflection in lots of areas of your life.
Here's how it works for me: Get a list of journaling prompts from the internet. Copy/paste is your friend. Print the list, stick it in the journal. Set an alarm that goes off every day to journal. Sit down in my "workspace" and set a timer for 20 minutes. Write down my feelings at that moment. (Not sure why this is hard for me) Do the next prompt on the list. I don't have to write for exactly 20 minutes. But, the prompt response is complete. Cross the prompt just completed off the list. Write down how I feel after the writing is done.
Prompts have cut down on the strong sense of futility I used to have. I still don't look forward to it, but much better experience overall..
