How long do people with ADHD typically take medication for?
Post Body

I've been on dextroamphetamine for about 8 months now, and it's going pretty great overall. I'm calm and focused and am much more efficient and productive than ever before. Lots of comorbid symptoms are slowly dissipating over time.

But when I don't take my meds (once or twice a month?) I find that even though my medicine has helped me form good habits and routines, I have no motivation to stick to them in a timely manner. I just get stuck in a cycle of trying to work up the will to do basic stuff like chores for hours on end. Things are a little better than they were, but not great.

Which makes me wonder... Is ADHD medication a for life (or until the side effects aren't worth it)? Or is there a point where I will just keep good habits without the assistance of medication? I've never discussed this with my doctor, was wondering if the community had some feedback.
