How do you "come out" to friends and family?
Post Body

So far, the only people in my life that know are my best friend, my mother and my boyfriend.

I was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year at the age of 21. My psychologist told me that a later diagnosis happens a lot with women. I started trying self-therapy by reading self-help books and articles and such, and started on Adderall IR. My life has improved a lot since then - I can clean my room, I can sit down and do my physics homework in 4 hours instead of 12, I can write comprehensible notes instead of sitting in class and oh I should call Mom and I wonder if my phone is dead and why haven't I... well, you get the picture.

In any case, the medications and the self-help have done wonders for me. But now, I think I need to "come out" to the rest of my family, and perhaps some of my friends. But I have some specific worries.

Dad: Not very cool with mental illness. His sister, who had schizophrenia, died just a few days ago, and the family is not saying it, but I'm suspecting illicit drug use was likely the root of her problems. So his brush with mental illness has been a "loony" sister who once thought a pile of laundry was a dead body and did way too many drugs. Unless you're THAT mentally ill, it's all in your head and you need to just get over it.

Brother: Spent 5 years in college. One of the town doctors was notoriously easy to get an Adderall prescription from, so a lot of his friends were suddenly diagnosed with ADHD and sold the pills to the freshman who hadn't heard of said doctor. ADHD isn't a real disorder, it's just undisciplined, lazy kids.

All my friends of college age: "Heeeey maaaaan, can I bum an Addy?" I'm terrified of that happening. I want to open up to them, but I don't want to be approached like the neighborhood study buddy dealer.

TL;DR: I want to open up, but I don't want to scare people away or become a drug dealer. How do I do that?
