For context, I'm a music teacher and I have private students who I teach weekly. I also do contracted work as a musician; teaching holiday programs, workshops at schools, things like that. I also have ADHD.
One of my students is a young boy with autism and, as I'm sure you know, requires pretty consistent scheduling to manage his anxiety. I completely understand and empathize with this as I have family members on the autism spectrum.
The other day I realized that I had double booked his lesson with a one off workshop that I had agreed to host. I messaged his mother and she was (understandably) upset. Where I have an issue is where she seemed to accuse me of not understanding or caring about the disruption my double booking would cause. She has even said that they might need to find a different teacher. And I feel rather upset about this.
In my mind, I can be understanding and caring of this young man's wellbeing but still make a mistake such as this.
To be more clear, double booking is a reasonably regular thing that I do. And i hate that I do but I feel like in trying my best. My schedule is so irregular and sometimes I agree to stuff and forget about other stuff and... yeah.
Is this a common thing for people with ADHD? i'm not on any meds at the moment but i'm meeting with my psychiatrist this week to discuss that.
