So what had happened was... I am a US resident and I have been working in a different state for the past month and a half. I knew that I wasn't going to be in my home state for Election Day, so I submitted a request to have a ballot mailed to my temporary address in another state. It never showed, so I assumed I had mailed the request too late and that it would be mailed to my address of record instead. No big deal, I knew I was traveling back to my home state the weekend before elections so I would just pick it up.
Well, I checked my home mailbox this past weekend and it wasn't there. Unfortunately, this past Saturday was outside of the window for early voting, too, so there was no way for me to vote while in town. I had to be back for work Saturday night, so I had to leave town without my ballot.
I'm three and a half hours away from the state line, four and a half hours away from my voting district, and I've come down with a cold, so taking on 8 hours of driving today to be back for work tomorrow is not an option. I even looked into flying back home for today so I could vote, but it's $400 that I don't have. To make matters worse, I live in a swing state, so my vote could really make a difference.
Given how much is at stake during this election, I'm feeling pretty guilty about dropping the ball-- I should have mailed my out-of-state request earlier, I should have followed up about my missing ballot, and I could have planned to travel back to my home state for early voting if I had planned ahead. I realize what a privilege it is to be able to participate in democratic elections and I'm ashamed that I let it slide in this fashion. I think people who don't have ADHD don't understand that even if something is of great importance, it's easy to lose track of it.
If you can vote, please go vote.
EDIT: I think I got it sorted. Thanks to everyone who gave advice in the thread. Cheers.
